About Carolyn & Terry ONeill

Terry and Carolyn O'Neill, Big Sky, Montana residents for 20 years.

Carolyn & Terry ONeill purchased this house in 1991

Why Carolyn & Terry ONeill chose Big Sky

Terry and I were on our way to Yellowstone National Park when we spent the night in Big Sky, Montana. Needless to say, the next day was a glorious July day and we immediately fell in love with Big Sky. After extending our stay another 4 days, we began planning our next trip to Montana to ski Lone Mountain. That January we knew it had won our hearts and we began our search for the perfect property. In 1991 we purchased our thirteen acre paradise on the Gallatin River. It was the best decision we have ever made!!

Guestbook comments from the manager

It will be hard to leave tomorrow!! This is definitely God's country!! Everyday has a highlight. My favorite part was early mornings in the nice, warm hot tub with my eyes shut listening to the river roar through and listening to the birds. Also, taking nap outside on the lounge chair wrapped up in a blanket. We also invited Carolyn & Terry over for dinner...being the gourmet chef my husband fixed an outstanding meal of salmon, shrimp, trout, chicken, potatoes, beans followed by a bottle of wine. It was such a blessing to have them over. Very, very beautiful people...loved the conversations...so down to earth and loving. This home is breathtaking. We hope to be back in the future.

Awesome location! Peaceful!

Wonderful week in Montana and the O'neils guest house was perfect for us. The O'neils are so welcoming and helpful. They brought me a humidifier from their attic to help with my dry sinuses! Plenty of living space. Open the windows and the sounds of the Gallatin will put your mind at ease. Never been a big hot tub fan but couldn't resist getting in their tub on the deck and looking at all the scenery. We never met our goal of catching a trout from the deck, but it can be done with the right fly and patience. The setting, accommodations, and hospitality were all top-notch. We will be back!!

Owner's Response: You'll just have to return to try for that trout from the deck!!!!
Terry and I loved your video of the elk sparring in the park. It was neat hearing the clanging of the antlers as they fought. What luck seeing that twice in one day.
September is our favorite time in Big Sky. The aspens are turning; the elk are bugling and sparring; and you can feel fall in the air. In addition, there aren't so many visitors so the park is so much more manageable.
Thank you for taking the time to write such a nice review about our guesthouse. We look forward to your return visit soon.

Wonderful Summer Vacation in Big Sky, MT!

  • 5 of 5
We loved our week at this beautiful home on the Gallatin River. Our hosts were most gracious and thoughtful before and during our stay. They were easy to reach in advance, responsive to all of our inquiries and their property was everything they promised. The clean and spacious guesthouse was equipped down to the coffee filters, toothpicks and popcorn machine in the bar. We enjoyed the use of the kitchen for some meals and found Big Sky (five miles away) to be charming for additional outings. We were only two couples, but there was an impressive "bunkhouse" in the basement so we would highly recommend this property to couples and families. We were really there to reconnect with old friends and this was a perfect place for the four of us to quietly do so. We were lazy and enjoyed the river, the fly fishing, the house and reading, so we can't speak too much on the local area beyond Big Sky, the earthquake lake, and a day trip to Bozeman. We did not journey to Yellowstone, as that was our next stop down the road. This is a destination where you could be as active as you would ever want, with a wonderful place to lay your head at the end of the day. We had a lovely stay!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write such a nice review. Our guesthouse is a great place to just chill out and reconnect with friends especially if you hadn't seen each other for a while. Although Yellowstone National Park is a big draw to visitors, there are many more things to do around Big Sky like Quake Lake, Ennis and Bozeman. I'm glad you could fit that into your vacation plans.
We hope to see you again some day soon.

We are all ready to return!

  • 5 of 5
We are six older folks from the east who were looking for western excitement and fun with very little stress. (Actually, the three men were looking to fly fish as much as possible while keeping the wives happy enough to keep marriages in tact.) The O'Neill guesthouse made all of this and more possible and fun. Terrific hosts -- very helpful, but never intrusive. While wet weather made early week fishing very iffy, by mid-week the boys were kept busy and very happy. The house itself is fantastic! Everything you need and more. The setting on the river is perfect, and the hot tub runs a very close second only to the 18" Rainbow caught by the author of this review -- but, unfortunately, not from the tub as one previous reviewer was able to report. The drives to Big Sky, Bozeman and Yellowstone are enjoyable and very scenic. Nothing but GOOD to report from our six eastern elders.

Heaven on the Gallatin River

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I are older newlyweds. I was always a beach girl while he was a mountain man, so we compromised and "headed to the mountains of Montana." He had spent two weeks every summer for the last 17 years at this wonderful place. to my surprise I am now a mountain girl There are opportunities for fly fishing, hiking, rafting, sight seeing, visiting Yellowstone National Park, golfing, and shopping! We enjoyed all these activities, but I could spend my entire trip on the deck watching the birds fly over the bluest sky I have ever seen and listening to the waters of the beautiful Gallatin River rush by. Great place,Great fun, Great vacation! We've booked for next year. Can't wait!!

Owner's Response: Choosing between the beach or the mountains is a big decision to make but I'm glad the mountains won out!! We made that same decision 21 years ago and have enjoyed the majesty of our surrounding mountains every day. Add blue skies and puffy white clouds and you have a perfect Montana day. It was our pleasure to offer you all of that on your visit. See you next summer.

Review of Oneill guest house on the Gallatin River

  • 5 of 5
From Linda Raulston:
Larry and I have been lucky enough to have been guests at the Oneill Guest house for 15 years. The fact that we have made it our August getaway for all these years says it all. Carolyn and Terry always make us feel most welcome. They provide a wonderful and comfortable place for us to completely relax. It's like going home. As we arrive at the guesthouse nestled behind tall evergreens its charm greets us with colorful baskets of flowers hanging across the it's front. The house's amenities take care of all of our needs. We spend lots of time on the deck which overlooks the Gallatin River. The scenery is extraordinary with towering evergeens overhanging the river, and the bird life is unbelievable, and the soothing sound of the river is so hypnotic that it is hard to stay awake. Up and down the river people flyfish, and all we have to do is walk off the deck into our own private flyfishing haven. Nearby is the hot tub where we usually relax before bedtime and watching the sky ablaze with stars. The large grill has become a popular place for the guys to congregate as each offers suggestions on when the meat should be turned. The kitchen is fully stocked with all one needs to persue the art of cooking. The dining table where we have spent so many happy hours sharing delicious meals and lots of tall tales accomodates ten.

The beds are very comfortable and well-dressed. Carolyn and Terry attend to everything one might need. They go so far as to spend nights in the guest house to check out everything one might need from a guests perspective.

They can recommend what sights around the area are a must to see.

You won't believe how wonderful your trip will be. The Oneills are the best hosts we've ever encountered. You will fall in love with them. They are family.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5
We wanted a place where our son (who lives in Bozeman), daughter and son-in-law and three grandchildren (ages 9, 7 and 4) could join us for a family vacation. It is a fabulous house with loads of space for active kids. The deck and hot tub were a great addition. The proximity to Yellowstone, Red Rock Preserve, Quake Lake and many hikes made it a memory-filled weekend for this outdoor-oriented family. the kitchen was well appointed, the home was well-maintained and uniquely western. It's close enough to BZN airport and Bozeman area to take in the Museum of the Rockies and other attractions from that area. We highly recommend the O'Neill guest house.
