At one

From the open-plan kitchen and dining room on the lower-ground floor, to the attic bedroom up on the third, Elgin Crescent VI's charms are wide-spread. At first glance you’ll notice the grand rooms with soaring ceilings and sash windows, but there are smaller details on display too: gilt-edged mirrors, blown glass chandeliers and a collection of bold modern canvases. On the ground-floor, the sitting room is particularly pleasing – a polished grand piano occupies one well-lit corner, and there’s a patterned chaise longue opposite, well-positioned for an afternoon spent people watching, or enjoying your hosts’ CD collection.

Your hostess runs her own charity, while your host works in the City. They’ve lived here for ten years, more recently with the addition of their two children and dog.

Sharing’s caring

There’s no shortage of space in this Georgian townhouse. The downstairs living area offers wide views of the garden through sliding glass doors, and in the other direction there’s a modern kitchen bordered by a breakfast bar, and a dining room brightened by a bold painting of coloured stripes. Upstairs each bedroom is appealing, but the master – with its stunning ensuite and swathes of grey velvet – might be the most obvious choice. After a day spent strolling the streets nearby, indulging in their mix of cool cafés and slick boutiques, a soak in the master bathroom’s free-standing tub will be well-deserved.

Notting Hill’s pretty pastel townhouses and vibrant market streets are definitely more than just a setting for a famous movie. As well as one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods it is also a key player in any history of London’s pop-cultural explosion over the last 50 years. Its physical charms, meanwhile, are many and undeniable and few areas pack in so diverse and plentiful a stretch of shopping and grazing possibilities.

First rediscovered by the more adventurous bohemian sorts in the late 1960s, the area retained a certain edge right up until the late 1980s when All Saints Road was known as the ‘front line’.

Today it is safe and upscale, and is home to elegant crescents of large white stucco houses, and communal garden squares, mixed in with upscale boutiques, bakeries and coffee shops.

But if Notting Hill has lost some of its street cred, the area retains a peculiar power to enchant. Many Londoners have a particular warm summer’s day and/or night spent in Notting Hill, when it can feel a unique urban idyll, etched in their memory.
