Waterloo & Lambeth House Rental Photos and Description
5 bedroom, 3 bathroom, mixture of modern and antique quirky house in West London
If anything were ever to inspire an uprising, it’s surely Kennington Park Road. Built in the year of the French Revolution, this home has the feel of an historic chateau – it even has a round extrusion that could be taken for a turret! The décor’s a mix of quirky modern design and gorgeous antiques, while outside, the mature garden’s the ideal spot for a long, lazy dinner en plein air. This home overlooks one of London’s oldest and most beautiful squares, as well as being close to the river and the Oval cricket ground. C'est vraiment fantastique!
Your hostess is from Burgundy, and the whole household is bilingual. Her husband is originally from the English countryside, while their three young children attend the local lycée. They’re regulars at the pretty pub around the corner, and at weekends they enjoy playing petanques with their neighbours in the square.
Have your cake and eat it
The interior of Kennington Park Road is wonderfully maze-like, and you’ll spend your first few minutes charging between rooms (flaming torches are, mercifully, unnecessary). The kitchen’s striking in black and white, with taps dispensing hot, cold and boiling water, and appliances that are bang up-to-date. Next door, the dining room displays a delicate sophistication that would please even Marie Antoinette, with sash windows, sage walls and a herringbone floor.
The sitting room’s floral armchairs cry out to be flopped on, while children will be charmed by their versions. The curved wall and high ceiling give this room the air of a salon, aided by the serene artwork and working fireplace.
Up on the first floor you’ll find the rounded master bedroom, with a DVD projector and an ensuite through the archway. A free-standing bath and walk-in shower lend this space a definite decadence, as do the his and hers basins and mirrors. And for those with work to do, there are two desks in the office in the hall.
Upstairs, the children’s twin is just scrumptious, with miniature beds and heaps of books and toys. There’s a kids’ bathroom next door, and a single with a wrought iron bed, presided over by a magisterial monkey. The final two bedrooms can be found in the loft, a single and twin, nestled in below deeply sloping eaves.
Sun yourself in Kennington Park or go for a stroll along the Thames, then perhaps go for tea at the nearby Brunswick House Café. You’re within walking distance of all the attractions of the South Bank, including the National Theatre, the BFI and the Hayward Gallery, as well as innumerable cafes and restaurants. The tube from Kennington to Leicester Square takes seven minutes.
