Kealakekua Bay House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8-12)

'Pathway of the Gods' is the meaning of the name given by ancient Hawaiians to Kealakekua Bay. Five hundred feet from the bay, nestled among the palm trees and fragrant plumeria blossoms is Hale Hanai, the site of your next vacation.

This two-story four-bedroom vacation rental home will give you a taste of old Hawaii, away from the crowds, with a large private yard abounding in pineapples, bananas and coconuts. Designed with a family in mind, Hale Hanai would love to be your home-away-from-home. 'Hanai' is a word Hawaiians use to designate adopted family. When you stay with us, you are our adopted family.

Upstairs, Mom and Dad can relax and enjoy their own private living room with views of the bay. The Alii (royalty) room is furnished with a California King bamboo canopy bed, a seating area, and a lanai from which to view some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. There is a fully-equipped kitchen and a dining room with a table that seats eight, as well as a china hutch with dishes for that special meal.

Downstairs the kids have their own living area, where they can enjoy watching a video or television. Equipped with a small dining table, a mini fridge, sink, and microwave, they have their own space. The Dolphin Room has a queen-size bed and is perfect to accommodate Grandma and Grandpa or a married child and spouse. The built-in daybed is wonderful for a younger child, and it also makes a great place to sit and enjoy a book while the ocean breezes rustle the curtains and wash your cares away. There is even a portable crib ready for a napping baby, if needed. The Volcano Room sports a double bed and the decor has been heavily influenced by Madame Pele, the goddess of fire. The Observatory Room has a daybed with a pullout trundle bed. Two queen-size sleeper sofas (one up, one down) round out the sleeping arrangements.

Across the bay is the historic Captain Cook monument that marks the place where the famous explorer met his untimely end. Spinner Dolphins visit the bay daily, and there is unparalleled snorkeling in this marine sanctuary. After a day of sightseeing or kayaking in the bay, the outdoor shower will wash away the sand. The barbeque awaits, as you dine outdoors on the picnic table as the sun sets on another perfect day in paradise.

Guestbook comments from the owner
This has been one of the funnest family vacations we've ever been on. We did all kinds of new stuff--kayaking, being one of them--and now we're actually giving advice at the kayak launch area. Swimming with the dolphins will, of course, be our top highlight.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful home with us.

Thom is a Sociology professor at the University of Hawaii in Hilo. Susan is a writer. We got married in 2000, after having both lost our spouses. Between us we have six children and seven grandchildren. We love to travel and see the world, and we love to stay home and enjoy the beautiful islands of Hawaii.

Susan Curtis purchased this house in 1990

We turned the former family home into a vacation rental. The family enjoyed being close to the ocean when we lived there. A transfer to the other side of the island for employment changed our residence, and this was a solution that allowed us to keep a home we all loved.

We enjoy staying at Hale Hanai whenever it isn't rented. We spend most weekends there and whatever other time we are able. It makes a wonderful writing retreat and a great place for us to invite friends and family from the mainland. We love the historic bay with the snorkeling and the dolphins. We love the quiet feel of old Hawaii. We love the smell of the flowers when we first get out of the car, overpoweringly fragrant.

PARADISE FOUND

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at hale Hanai with our friends for two weeks. We all had the best stay, in this beautiful, spacious, well equipped family home beach house. Everything we needed was there, like our own home away from home! And it's just a minute walk to the awesome bay, which you can access to from three beaches, all beautiful, and just THERE ! No driving, just a nice little stroll WOW! And up the road, a shaved ice and hamburger stand! Susan proved to be a wonderful hostess, greeting us upon our arrival.
Such a lovely stay,we can't wait ito go back, and if you go check out Gios gelato, gotta try it,soo good! Thanks Thom and Susan for a relaxing unforgettable stay for our vacation, you guys, simply the best! Big Big Mana Big big Mahalo Tim and Michele Coxm

GREAT LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
Our group of 4 rented the downstairs unit for 1week. We enjoyed the proximity to the Bay for kayaking and snorkeling. Local area hill running was great. Mrs. Curtis was very helpful in getting us set up with the kitchenware requested. The place was clean with plenty of beach and bathing towels. Would stay here again.

WONDERFUL HONEYMOON ESCAPE!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I recently honeymooned here, and we absolutely loved it! The house is roomy, well-ventilated and clean. We loved all the personal touches, including the towel origami and the colorful coconuts. It was also nice to have a big kitchen and patio to cook in. It looks just as good as it does in the pictures. The house is really close to the bay, which is so peaceful. Stay here when you come to the Big Island. It's beautiful and secluded. We highly recommend it!

HOME PARADISE

  • 5 of 5
In a life of roaming the world, my wife and I have stayed in a hundred guest houses. This is one of the best. Big and comfortable, yet open to the Hawaiian breezes, it is just steps from a little village around an historic bay. We kayaked across the bay with visits from dolphins, whales and a manta ray. There was lots of room for family and friends too. You are going to love this place.
