A magnificent 18th century palace on a quiet street in the beautiful, and now chic and trendy Marais District of Paris, offers a special apartment for fortunate guests. Enter through a high portal into a quiet and beautiful courtyard lined with boxed Magnolias. Then enter through a private door directly into the apartment. The light from the courtyard enters the apartment, but cunning glass French doors prevent any prying eyes from seeing inside, while the insiders have an unobstructed view of the courtyard. The large entry hall, lined with 18th century stone is still modern and welcoming, with planted lemon trees, interesting antiques from the owners' travels, and attractive paintings. Add to this every modern comfort. The apartment is on two floors with two separate living rooms. There are two master bedrooms on the entry floor each with its own modern bathroom, and one double and one with two twin beds, and its own sitting area, on the lower floor. The two floors are separated by a charming spiral staircase. There is a beautiful dining room which seats 10 easily, a nice kitchen, and much more.
It is located in one of Parisians' most favored locations, the Marais. From the mid-thirteenth century, the Marais became one of the most important aristocratic areas of Paris. By World War II the Marais had declined, but a major effort was made beginning in the 1950's to renovate the area. The main palaces and mansions were restored and turned into museums: the Picasso Museum, the Paris Historical Museum and the Cognac-Jay Museum are now prominent and worthy of a visit. In turn, this building has been returned to its former glory by an eminent designer/developer and a very few privileged owners have apartments in it. The Georges Pompidou Museum, France's national Museum of Modern Art and one of the world's most important cultural institutions, was built on the western edge of the Marais. Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano were the architects of this architecturally revolutionary building. The Marais has become incredibly chic and you will find trendy shops, countless art galleries, and all varieties of restaurants and cafes. You can shop away and dine very well between museum visits!
The Pompidou, Picasso, Carnavelet Museums, the Place de Voges, The Seine, the Cathedral of Notre Dame are a 10 mn walk. You will also find the Opera not far away. Two metros are less than a 4 minute walk, RER a 7 minute walk, 2 bus stops within 2 Minutes.
The apartment is quiet and in a good location. That is all that is good about this place. The photos and furnishings make it look far better than reality.
The lower level (2 bedrooms and a living room) is a subterranean basement with no windows. The ventilation is poor. All bathrooms are all interior also with poor ventilation. Only one of the so-called master bedrooms upstairs has a bath adjacent. This bedroom is also interior and has no exterior windows. The other master bedroom uses a bath off the kitchen. The only operable window is the front door to the courtyard. You are not allowed to use or sit in the courtyard. The circular stair is treacherous especially with luggage. To use the garden you must exit to the street and use another entrance. The washer dryer was useless with no instructions. We asked for instructions on arrival and did not receive. One of the two ceiling fans did not function. We were told for additional ventilation to buy additional fans and be reimbursed. There is also a vented floor drain in the dining room either for sewer or grey water. Our stay was tolerable but we would not recommend this apartment. It is not worth the price.
FYI: In accordance with most US most building codes and the International Uniform Building Code, three of the four bedrooms would be illegal as they have no exterior windows for emergency egress and access. Is this different under French law? Whatever the law is in France, it should be noted that these bedrooms are not considered safe or legal in the US.

The property was as described, clean, charm and great location. The apartments arrangement work very well for our family. My daughter used one of the two bedrooms on the main floor and my wife and I used the other. The lower level was perfect for our son, his wife and daughter, giving them privacy as a family but part of the whole group. The proximity to all the sites is great, within walking distance many.
The location of the apartment was excellent and we enjoyed the neighborhood and its proximity to the Marais district. How can you not love being in Paris! The apartment was well appointed and had WiFi which was great There were 8 of us and we did find the description of the apartment somewhat misleading. The spiral staircase to the lower floor was extremely narrow and difficult to get suitcases up and down. Also, the fourth bedroom on the lower floor with the twin beds was open onto the living room and there was no privacy. We would recommend that the apartment be advertised as a three bedroom apartment with two additional twin beds so it can sleep up to 8 people. We had a slight plumbing problem with the toilet in the downstairs bathroom while we were there and it was very noisy when the toilet was flushed or the shower used. There are no windows downstairs as it's below ground and the only windows upstairs are at the front of the apartment. To manage expectations of the renters, we think these points need to be made in the description.
