Perfect venue to escape to after a wedding at Gretna Green or for a family looking for a castle experience, to explore the Scottish Borders and Lake District.
This Anglo-Scots 16th century tower house, a former stronghold of the Clan Graham, dates back to 1584, and due to the border being redrawn, is unique as it is a Scottish castle which now stands in England. Situated within two acres of grounds, it is located less than 10 miles from Gretna, making this an ideal location as a romantic setting.
The castle as a whole covers two different eras. The main tower section has 5 foot thick walls, vaulted kitchen, Great Hall and stone turnpike stairs, which all have an air of stepping back to the 16th century. On the ground floor is the impressive vaulted room, with kitchen and breakfasting area with stunning central red sandstone table. On the floor above is the former Great Hall, which now houses a dining room, which can seat up to 16 people, and makes the perfect room to host a grand banquet. With inglenook fireplace, a suit of armour in a recess, claymores and additional armoury on the walls, this magnificent room is focal point to the castle. One the second floor is the impressive bridal suite, a four poster bedroom with en-suite bath, whilst on the floor above is a family bedroom with four beds, with en-suite shower room. Whilst the smaller section of the castle seems more modern in contrast, with a bright airy sitting room and two double bedrooms en-suite on the floor above. Attached to the castle, and sharing the drive, is a Jacobean cottage, which is available as a holiday let cottage for 4 adults either separately or with the main castle. Outside there is a parking area, which is gravel and lawn to the front, with a central seating area with fountain. To the rear of the castle is a working farm with farmhouse and farm steading (currently under repair). The castle is ideal for smaller wedding parties having married at Gretna looking for a special venue, or for those just looking for a special place for a family occasion or family holiday.
