Review of the Cottage

Pumzy Acton, Massachusetts
Review Submitted: October 3, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2008
We were delighted to stay in this beautiful property close to Tanglewood and the wonderful attractions of the Berkshires. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the owner who walked us through the suite and gave us a tutorial on the locks, lights and the immediate attractions. The suite was decorated with beautiful antique furniture which was tastefully arranged around this very large room. Sliders allowed entrance of a cool breeze, and the trees outside allowed for a view of the property, and a line of trees that separated the yard from the road assured privacy. Continental breakfast was provided by the owner, and we took it to the park and enjoyed the sights and sounds of Western Massachusetts.

The owner lives on the premises and is always attentive to requests, whether it be regarding needs in the suite or directions to dining in the area. She is a fountain of knowledge, and is available most times during the day or evening.

There is a step-up shower that could be a issue for an elderly person or one with a mobility problem. There is a solid grab bar for safety and security.

We will definitely stay there again, as there is no hotel or motel with this kind of space, charm, decoration, location and amenities

The Cottage

Miami Sharon Miami
Review Submitted: January 25, 2010 Date of Stay: January 2010
We had a delightful visit to the Berkshires this January. It was certainly enhanced by our choice of lodging. As the person responsible for planning this weekend getaway, I was apprehensive at the thought of staying somewhere that was unfamiliar to me and was only represented online. (I was unsuccessful at locating any online reviews.) However, my fears were most definitely put to rest upon arrival. Our accommodation was far more spacious than Carole, our innkeeper had described. It was clean and well furnished. The pictures from the website did not do this "Antique Suite" justice! It was beautiful and spacious. The innkeeper knew exactly how to both be accessible and invisible at the same time, leaving us plenty of privacy. If all of that was not enough, the location was absolutely perfect. It was close to everything and yet just far enough out of the center of town to be peaceful. Our family is looking forward to another visit next fall to the Berkshires and most definitely will be reserving this same accommodation.

Longtime summer renter

RadioProducer Walpole, Ma
Review Submitted: September 28, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2000
I've been staying in this house every summer since 1997, at the opposite end. This place is truly a home away from home. If you hate motels, and don't like the group breakfasts of B&Bs, then you should consider this place very seriously. The owner has occasionally given me a couple of weeks in the unit over the years, and I can report that it is charming, spacious, quiet and a discriminating antique collector's abode. The location, close to Tanglewood and Stockbridge is unbeatable.
I highly recommend getting to know the owner, an authority
on the area, with numerous articles and multiple publications.
Not only does the owner have great accommodations, but will
steer your visit to what whets your curiosity. Think of it as a great
place with a published author on the area for your tour guide.

Positives and Issues

Nar Saline, Michigan
Review Submitted: August 27, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
First the positives: The location is excellent and the antique furniture and other antique items in the suite are beautiful. The property description was accurate and the suite was clean. The outside resources could not be used be used because of a massive mosquito infestation.
Now the issues: Overall, the experience was uncomfortable and the value for the price paid was poor. The owner lives on attached property and is somewhat brusque and bossy. The unit is musty and moldy smelling. One room is air conditioned, and the air conditioner sounds like a loud airplane engine - impossible to sleep with the air conditioning running [and the week was very hot!]. The one small bathroom is very dysfunctional - a high step up to and out of the small shower - slippery grab bar as the only safety device. The only sink is in the room just outside the bathroom in a very dark corner without a light - impossible to apply make-up with any precision. "Kitchen" facilities are crowded into a small closet - without any work surface. The only eating table is a small wobbly top on an ornate metal base which sticks out, bumps knees and ankles, and makes it difficult to use the already dysfunctional table. The person who slept in a twin bed, found that it sloped uncomfortably, and ended up sleeping on the floor for two nights. In addition, the landlady is very stingy with toilet paper - we needed to provide our own for a few days.
I would not recommend this property to a friend or relative.
Owner's Response: In response to the criticism of a guest, I would like to say:
1. Thank you, yes, the Tanglewood Suites are conveniently-located, very large, well-appointed, and clean.
2. The mosquitoes were terrible this year, unusually bad, all over Berkshire County through no fault of ours or any other Berkshire property owner
2. The air conditioner works well, quietly, and cools the entire suite when the guests leave the adjustments as set and only operate the on/off switch, but any suggestion from management about the smooth running of the AC was taken amiss by this guest -- so unnecessary problems were created.
3. Likewise, they were told at check-in that anything they need or request would be quickly and happily provided, they need only ask. When they mentioned that they had purchased toilet paper, more was brought to them immediately, and they were told it was unnecessary to buy toilet paper, toilet paper or any other additional need would be provided if they would simply let us know what it was.
4. When they left it took 5 hours to clean up after them -- every surface was marred. Rotten food and trash was everywhere, odd personal items were on the floor, in closets, behind the toilet, and that it caused an odor or mustiness, it is not surprising. When they left, I concur it smelled like nothing I have ever smelled. It was very difficult to clean, sanitize and deodarize after the uncommom mess left by these guests -- a mess I have actually never seen in 12 years of welcoming guests.
5. A final note, that evening two new guests arrived. When they left, they put a note on the table enthusing about how delightful the accomodations were. Not feeling that was enough, they turned around drove back and told me personnally how special their stay was and how soon they would like to come again. I am very thankful that that is the more common response to a stay at this property
