Positives and Issues
Review Submitted: August 27, 2009
Date of Stay: August 2009
First the positives: The location is excellent and the antique furniture and other antique items in the suite are beautiful. The property description was accurate and the suite was clean. The outside resources could not be used be used because of a massive mosquito infestation.
Now the issues: Overall, the experience was uncomfortable and the value for the price paid was poor. The owner lives on attached property and is somewhat brusque and bossy. The unit is musty and moldy smelling. One room is air conditioned, and the air conditioner sounds like a loud airplane engine - impossible to sleep with the air conditioning running [and the week was very hot!]. The one small bathroom is very dysfunctional - a high step up to and out of the small shower - slippery grab bar as the only safety device. The only sink is in the room just outside the bathroom in a very dark corner without a light - impossible to apply make-up with any precision. "Kitchen" facilities are crowded into a small closet - without any work surface. The only eating table is a small wobbly top on an ornate metal base which sticks out, bumps knees and ankles, and makes it difficult to use the already dysfunctional table. The person who slept in a twin bed, found that it sloped uncomfortably, and ended up sleeping on the floor for two nights. In addition, the landlady is very stingy with toilet paper - we needed to provide our own for a few days.
I would not recommend this property to a friend or relative.
Owner's Response: In response to the criticism of a guest, I would like to say:
1. Thank you, yes, the Tanglewood Suites are conveniently-located, very large, well-appointed, and clean.
2. The mosquitoes were terrible this year, unusually bad, all over Berkshire County through no fault of ours or any other Berkshire property owner
2. The air conditioner works well, quietly, and cools the entire suite when the guests leave the adjustments as set and only operate the on/off switch, but any suggestion from management about the smooth running of the AC was taken amiss by this guest -- so unnecessary problems were created.
3. Likewise, they were told at check-in that anything they need or request would be quickly and happily provided, they need only ask. When they mentioned that they had purchased toilet paper, more was brought to them immediately, and they were told it was unnecessary to buy toilet paper, toilet paper or any other additional need would be provided if they would simply let us know what it was.
4. When they left it took 5 hours to clean up after them -- every surface was marred. Rotten food and trash was everywhere, odd personal items were on the floor, in closets, behind the toilet, and that it caused an odor or mustiness, it is not surprising. When they left, I concur it smelled like nothing I have ever smelled. It was very difficult to clean, sanitize and deodarize after the uncommom mess left by these guests -- a mess I have actually never seen in 12 years of welcoming guests.
5. A final note, that evening two new guests arrived. When they left, they put a note on the table enthusing about how delightful the accomodations were. Not feeling that was enough, they turned around drove back and told me personnally how special their stay was and how soon they would like to come again. I am very thankful that that is the more common response to a stay at this property
