Here's what some of our guests have had to say:

Hi Jan,

We've just returned from your house in Asheville......How wonderful!!! The house was great, the firepit was so enjoyable, but without a doubt,,,,,the most wonderful part of the property was the guest house! Our family enjoyed the pool table, and gas logs, but the porch was absolutely fantastic! How great to sit out on the porch and listen to the creek with our family. The time we spent was unforgettable. Our parents are getting a little older, and our family time is limited, and with part of us in S.C, and part of us in Kentucky we seldom have time when all of us are together,,,,, We will treasure this time for many years to come.

This was such a blessing!

Thanks again...

More Comments...: 'This has been a great family vacation! We hiked almost everyday...the most beautiful and fun for the kids was hiking 'Graveyard Trail'. We visited the N.C. Arboretum, Black Mountain, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, The Grove Park Inn...just to name a few! Had dinner at the Pisgah Inn - it was good, but really enjoyed cooking steaks here on the grill. We had a campfire each night and read ghost stories from a book we left for you to enjoy! We'll be back!' The Wilkens Family

About Jan Stephenson

Keith and Jan have called Central Florida 'home' since 1984, where we established a custom sign manufacturing business. Designing and creating signs has been a great way to use our God-given talents and also has lead us down the road to renovating and restoring houses through the years..

Jan Stephenson purchased this house in 1992

Why Jan Stephenson chose Asheville

We absolutely fell in love with this property and the whole area in the Pisgah National Forest when first laying eyes on it! There are 8 homes on a total of 77 acres that were notched out of the Forest back in 1930's and little by little most of these homes were constructed by Bob Doutin who built our house in 1952.

Home renovations and decorating has been our joy and given us much satisfaction, so it was a natural fit for us to find such a unique opportunity and begin a renovating process again. Our latest project completed was tearing down an old garage and building a wonderful gameroom/guesthouse (Creekside finished in 2007) re-using the beautiful rough-sawn oak boards to make kitchen cabinets and a dining table for the new structure!

We began sharing this amazing property with friends and family many years ago and it only gets to be more fun with each ensuing year (thanks to VRBO and HomeAway)! Word's cannot begin to say how much God has blessed us with this place and what a privilege it is to 'meet' all the new travelers who contact us to stay here in our 'little piece of heaven'!

What makes this house unique

2 beautiful mountainside acres with oaks, ironwoods, poplars and hemlocks towering over the wild rhododendron and mountain laurel and creek.

Though we have a few neighboring homes, none are in view of our property.

Privacy and serenity are key.

Fire pit down by the creek.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mountain High and Creekside. The accommodations provided all the amenities we need to make us feel right at home. The Hot Tub and Pool table provided hours of fun. Central air-conditioning was also a big plus.

The location was perfect, central to all the attractions in the Asheville area. during our stay we were able to enjoy zip lining, white water rafting, horseback riding (10 minutes away at Pisgah View Ranch). We traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway more than once...stopping to take in the breathtaking views.

We visited sliding rock and looking glass falls as well as the Dupont State Reservation and it's many waterfalls and sites.

We also traveled to Chimney Rock state park and Lake Lure. All these attractions are within about an hour radius from Mountain High and made for the best vacation we've had in a long time.

MEMORABLE VACATION!

  • 5 of 5
Dear Jan and Keith,

Thanks so much for sharing your gorgeous place with us. You did a fantastic job with Creekside! And the area is gorgeous. We had a fabulous day hiking Mt Pisgah and seeing a few of the waterfalls of Transylvania County. And the kids enjoyed Sliding Rock, though I didn't fare so well there! : )

Also had a great day at the Biltmore, visited Cherokee, and had time to explore Asheville. Loved Malaprops!

And your beautiful home was the perfect way to start and end each day. From a relaxing breakfast next to the creek, with hummingbirds all around us, to an evening around the fire, we will never forget it.

All in all a fantastic trip. One we plan to repeat for sure!

Thanks again,

Doug

Dreams Come True

  • 5 of 5
I studied the photos for months prior to our trip - imagining where everyone would sleep and where we would congregate for shared activities and escape when we needed to. I was afraid it wouldn't live up to my admittedly high expectations but Mountain High & Creekside exceeded all of my hopes. I enjoyed a fraction of the pride Keith and Jan must feel as members of our party arrived and gushed about the property.
Well stocked kitchens & baths, firewood ready for s'mores, pool table & tv over at creekside made the rainy days fun. Fluffy bath towels and comfy beds (with windows open to let in the mountain breezes). These were a few of my favorite things.

Rolfes vacation

Our visit to the North Carolina mountains and the Stephenson's cabins was wonderful. These are exceptionally delightful cabins and you will feel as though you are visiting long time friends!
Everything was in order, the houses were immaculate, well furnished and very, very comfortable.
we hope to return some day.

Great three days

  • 5 of 5
This proved to be a perfect place for 7 family members, ages 64-79 from Ohio and Pennsylvania. Although isolated, it is easy to get to and both houses are outstanding and equipped with anything one could need. Jan was very helpful and pleasant to work with. My only criticism, and it is so minor I hesitate to mention it is the key boxes. The numbers are hard to see and we had a tough time getting them back in place. The rest of our trip was fabulous. We went to eat at the Pisgah Inn, and while the trip up Rt 151 to the BR Parkway is a bit of an adventure, it is well worth the trip. Both the meal and the view is impressive. We did the red trolley tour of Ashville. It is a good way to get an overview of the city. We ate ar 12 Ribs in the River Arts district and it was fantastic(try the ribs). We spent a day in Cherokee and went to "Unto These Hills" outdoor drama. It is wortwhile, but ends for the season this week. All in all it is a great area to visit, a great place to stay, and good people to work with.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Phil, for your lovely comments and review of the property and accommodations for your group...it was our pleasure to host you all and welcome you back any time you choose to visit the Asheville area again.

Yes, there are no street lights in the wooded area at the end of our driveway where the lockbox holding the gate and house key is accessed. However, we do recommend that guests bring a flashlight with them so they can have a well lit lockbox keypad especially when arriving after dark.

Appreciatively,
Jan and Keith

Abbott mountain vacation

  • 5 of 5
Wow. We loved this place. It seems so secluded and beautiful. The views, even in January with no snow, were gorgeous. We spent some time playing pool over at Creekside. Explored the creek and wandered around the "neighborhood". We tried the scenic view to get to the cabin, but the Blue Ridge Parkway was closed for snow and ice. We drove up to the Parkway from the other side and it is a very scenic drive.

We spent a day at the Biltmore, several people had told us we HAD to go there, and I am glad we spent the day. We drove to Cherokee and took a day to drive to Gatlinburg and the Cades Cove Loop. We did see a huge elk outside of Cherokee.

The only negative, if you can even consider it a negative, is that wifi is difficult at Mountain High. If you are on vacation, I would hope to not need to check email, but it does happen.

Both of the homes were charming, with Mountain High being especially cozy. We even had a Christmas tree!
I am hopeful we can return, next time with our children and granddaughter. I imagine fires down by the creek. We were unable to have one due to constant misty rain.

Thank you for a lovely place to remember!

Owner's Response: Hi Jason,

How we loved reading you comments and review! We always love the beauty up on our mountain no matter the time of year.

Please forgive me for not letting you know that the wi-fi works best in the bedrooms closest to Creekside (although I was able to get 2-3 bars on my laptop in Mountain High's living room). We'll again change the location of the router to better improve reception when we go up for a work week in Feb. Thanks for letting us know about it.

We look forward to your return,
Jan and Keith

Mountain Retreat

  • 5 of 5
Five seniors and their canine companions just enjoyed a wonderful week at Mountain High and Creekside. The amenities provided by the owners were numerous and thoughtful. The two houses were cozy and comfortable with well stocked kitchens. The location was perfect. It was easy to hike off the Blue Ridge Parkway or dash into Asheville for sightseeing and shopping. The homes were perfect places to unwind and relax in the evenings. We especially enjoyed dining at the Mt. Pisgah Inn and other dining options in Asheville. We have already recommended this Mountain Retreat to family and friends.
