Here's what some of our guests have had to say:

Hi Jan,

We've just returned from your house in Asheville......How wonderful!!! The house was great, the firepit was so enjoyable, but without a doubt,,,,,the most wonderful part of the property was the guest house! Our family enjoyed the pool table, and gas logs, but the porch was absolutely fantastic! How great to sit out on the porch and listen to the creek with our family. The time we spent was unforgettable. Our parents are getting a little older, and our family time is limited, and with part of us in S.C, and part of us in Kentucky we seldom have time when all of us are together,,,,, We will treasure this time for many years to come.

This was such a blessing!

Thanks again...

The McDonald's

More Comments...: 'This has been a great family vacation! We hiked almost everyday...the most beautiful and fun for the kids was hiking 'Graveyard Trail'. We visited the N.C. Arboretum, Black Mountain, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, The Grove Park Inn...just to name a few! Had dinner at the Pisgah Inn - it was good, but really enjoyed cooking steaks here on the grill. We had a campfire each night and read ghost stories from a book we left for you to enjoy! We'll be back!' The Wilkens Family

About Jan Stephenson

Keith and Jan have called Central Florida 'home' since 1984, where we established a custom sign manufacturing business. Designing and creating signs has been a great way to use our God-given talents and also has lead us down the road to renovating and restoring houses through the years..

Jan Stephenson purchased this house in 1992

Why Jan Stephenson chose Asheville

We absolutely fell in love with this property and the whole area in the Pisgah National Forest when first laying eyes on it! There are 8 homes on a total of 77 acres that were notched out of the Forest back in 1930's and little by little most of these homes were constructed by Bob Doutin who built our house in 1952.

Home renovations and decorating has been our joy and given us much satisfaction, so it was a natural fit for us to find such a unique opportunity and begin a renovating process again. Our latest project completed was tearing down an old garage and building a wonderful gameroom/guesthouse (Creekside finished in 2007) re-using the beautiful rough-sawn oak boards to make kitchen cabinets and a dining table for the new structure!

We began sharing this amazing property with friends and family many years ago and it only gets to be more fun with each ensuing year (thanks to VRBO and HomeAway)! Words cannot begin to say how much God has blessed us with this place and what a privilege it is to 'meet' all the new travelers who contact us to stay here in our 'little piece of heaven'!

What makes this house unique

2 beautiful mountainside acres with oaks, ironwoods, poplars and hemlocks towering over the wild rhododendron, mountain laurel and creek.

Though we have a few neighboring homes, none are in view of our property.

Privacy and serenity are key.

Fire pit down by the creek.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Jan and Keith, Thank you for opening your home to our family. We had a great time and enjoyed gathering at Creekside. Both kids and adults loved playing

Dear Jan and Keith,

Thanks so much for sharing your gorgeous place with us. You did a fantastic job with Creekside! And the area is gorgeous. We had a fabulous day hiking Mt Pisgah and seeing a few of the waterfalls of Transylvania County. And the kids enjoyed Sliding Rock, though I didn't fare so well there! : )

Also had a great day at the Biltmore, visited Cherokee, and had time to explore Asheville. Loved Malaprops!

And your beautiful home was the perfect way to start and end each day. From a relaxing breakfast next to the creek, with hummingbirds all around us, to an evening around the fire, we will never forget it.

All in all a fantastic trip. One we plan to repeat for sure!

Thanks again,

Fabulous time!

  • 5 of 5

Jan and Keith,

We had a fabulous time with our friends during our stay. The two houses worked out very well for two families with small children. The creek was a great place for the kids to play. The nearby hiking was awesome (our kids first time hiking in the mountains). The large kitchen and deck at Creekside perfect for family meals. This may have just started a family tradition for us. Thanks again!

Wonderful mountain retreat

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful mountain retreat vacation home. Quiet and serene. Perfect for our party of 7 adults. Jan and Keith were available to answer any questions we had. Beds were very comfortable and the houses were very clean. We enjoyed our close proximity to Ashville. Loved Black Mountain shopping. Many great restaurants in close proximity. Locals were very friendly and helpful. Enjoyed the art districts. Would highly recommend this property to all seeking a mountain getaway. Interesting history. Would love to go back there again next year. Cleo

Great Spring Break

  • 5 of 5

We had such a fun time on our Asheville Spring Break trip and it's due in large part to these wonderful accommodations. You won't find a more friendly and helpful host anywhere than with Jan, and we loved the warmth, beauty and spaciousness of this rental - you can tell by looking around at all the detailed craftsmanship the love and care that went into this place. And it is very clean and well stocked - everything you need is there! For families with tweens/teens like ours, it's so great to have Creekside where the boys could have their space away from us at times, then other times we'd all hang out there together to play pool, cook on the grill, and chill on the screened porch listening to the creek or in front of the tv. We also had a few campfires and smores outside which was fun. My 14 year old left saying he was thinking of college in Asheville and if this place is for sale, he wants to buy it and live here! You can't get a higher compliment than that from a normally grumpy teenager.

Asheville was fun with so much to do. The weather was sunny and beautiful (highs in 60's and 70's) all but one day which was cold and rainy (we spent that one at Fun Depot - awesome place!) We really enjoyed Biltmore Estate, hiking at Chimney Rock and spots along the Blue Ridge Parkway, town of Black Mountain, Asheville trolley tour, St. Patrick's Day party with Irish dancers at Highland Brewery, Scottish violinist Jamie Laval at the Altamont Theatre, meeting Jonas Gerard at his art studio, Lexington Glassworks.... I'm probably leaving some things out. Excellent food and service everywhere we went - Chestnut, 12 Bones, Moose Cafe, Carmel's at Grove Arcade, Barley's, and Fatz's which is closer than driving into town. And lots of craft beer - I'm normally a wine person but the beer was so good and it's the beer capital of the US, they say! So I had both (highly recommend the wine from Biltmore winery too).

In summary, everything was great with Mountain High/Creekside and Asheville, and would be a great trip for couples, families, girlfriends/guys' trip, whatever, any time of year I'm sure - I highly recommend it!

Beatiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

In spite of record setting cold, snow and two ice storms, we were very warm and comfortable during our week here. The property is gorgeous and the houses are extremely well equipped with everything one needs to make the stay enjoyable. We hope to come back at some point in the warmer months so we can do more hiking and sightseeing. Jan and Keith were very responsive and always available by phone. Our only advice is that if you come during the colder months, be aware that any snow or ice, though rare, may make it difficult to get of the the property because of the hills.

Owner's Response: It was our pleasure to have you all as our were a joy! Yes, you did hit the jackpot on weather during your weeks stay! Definitely not the normal winter by any stretch for us here. We have been coming up every week in late February for now 24 years to do a "work week" to get ready for the busy season and only encountered snow 2 times which took a day to melt! It truly is helpful to have 4 wheel drive during snow even though it is normally not needed. We will be happy to add an extra day to a weeks stay to make up for the day you lost for leaving early next time you visit! Best Regards, Jan and Keith

Clean, Safe and well kept. Very Enjoyable.

My husband and I had stayed before and we knew this would be a good family vacation place for us. The children were really happy with your Creekside and the grandchildren loved Mountain High. We all enjoyed our stay. Well kept lawns and place plus activities were close by. I would recommend this property because we hope to maybe take on a stay in warmer weather. We love it that much. Steve and I like trying local restaurants. Visiting little shops riding parkway. Children enjoyed tubing at Tube World plus hiking the trails. Everything was already for us on arrival, had all we needed there. Very relaxing. Kids had lots of room to play hiding seek and very safe. Thank you again. We enjoyed.
