Large old house, with courtyard and roof terrace for sunbathing or eating out. The village has a bar, two restaurants, and a nearby shop/bakery, and is located at the foothills of the Cevennes, 2km from the junction of the rivers Herault and Vis. Swimming in both these rivers is a delight, and is the reason we bought the house 22 years ago; the river Vis is one of the cleanest in France, because most of its length is underground. 8 minute's walk from the house is a beautiful waterfall; the pools below it are large, and deep enough to dive in, and a few metres downstream are gently sloping shingle beaches safe for small children. The nearest town (supermarkets etc) is 4km, and Montpellier 50km.

This house is suitable for a large party, or two families, and because there are two kitchens and two sitting rooms it is ideal if lots of teenagers are coming to stay. There are five bedrooms on two floors: three doubles, and two singles with 3 beds each. There are futons and camp-beds for extra guests. There are two spaces (a garden courtyard and a roof terrace with a pergola) where you can eat out and sunbathe, and a kitchen and bathroom on both floors. Two washing machines are provided, and there is a ping-pong table in the basement. If you want a smaller apartment suitable for up to five people, see the details given under 'Unit B'; the house divides into two private apartments, each with their own interior front door

We bought the house in 1988 with a small legacy from my father, who taught French and would have loved the area; the key attraction for me was the waterfall - best swimming I've ever had!

The village is at the border of the coastal plain and the foothills of the Cevennes, in the Languedoc, almost equidistant between the airports of Nimes and Montpellier. It is 10 minutes by road to the nearest town, Ganges, where there are supermarkets, and a great market on Friday mornings. A small river runs through the village, and joins the river Vis, which is perfect for bathing. Beaches at Sete and Agde and Palavas (Montpellier) are about an hour and a half's drive away, but much better swimming for all ages is to be had 8 minute's walk from the house, in the waterfalls and pools of the Vis. The Herault is also good for swimming and canoeing.

Notes

  • Weeks run from Saturday 5pm to Saturday 10am. A £50 key bond (returnable deposit) is payable with the rent. Electricity included from the first Saturday in May to the last Saturday in October. If you are unlucky, and the gas cylinder for cooking runs out during your stay, you will have to purchase a replacement (approx £25); but if you do have to do this, we will reimburse you (against a receipt). If you are booking from outside the UK, the full rental including ALL bank transfer charges is payable. If you are paying by credit card through this site they make a charge of 1.9% and this is normally added to your invoice.

There is not room for 12 people to eat in one kitchen. There is sufficient room however on either of the terraces. Please note that because there are two kitchens, there are two large fridges, two cookers, and two washing machines available if you take the whole house.
