Large old house, with courtyard and roof terrace for sunbathing or eating out. The village has a bar, two restaurants, and a nearby shop/bakery, and is located at the foothills of the Cevennes, 2km from the junction of the rivers Herault and Vis. Swimming in both these rivers is a delight, and is the reason we bought the house 22 years ago; the river Vis is one of the cleanest in France, because most of its length is underground. 8 minute's walk from the house is a beautiful waterfall; the pools below it are large, and deep enough to dive in, and a few metres downstream are gently sloping shingle beaches safe for small children.

The nearest town (supermarkets etc) is 4km, and Montpellier 50km.

Although the whole property divides neatly into two self-contained apartments, A and B, each having its own bathroom, kitchen, sitting room, place to sit out/eat out, and each having privacy (i.e. a lockable interior front door), it can also be rented as a whole, for a large family or two families together. Both apartments are airy and spacious, with large rooms. They both have access to a games room with a ping-pong table, at street level.

The house is old, with thick walls and shutters - ideal for keeping cool in summer.

Unit A is downstairs; it has a very similar configuration to Unit B, with a fully equipped kitchen, large fridge, four ring gas cooker with grill and oven, electric coffee maker, food processor, washing machine etc. It has a double bedroom and a bedroom with three single beds, a shower room, and a large sitting room with double futon. It has a courtyard (connected to the kitchen and the sitting room via french doors) which is large enough for bbqs, sunbathing and eating out.

Unit B is upstairs; it has a fully equipped kitchen, with a large fridge, four ring gas cooker with grill and oven, electric coffee maker, food processor, washing machine etc. It has a double bedroom and a bedroom with three single beds, a bathroom with bath/shower, and a large sitting room with two single futons. Via a spiral staircase in the sitting room, there is a roof terrace with a wisteria-covered pergola, with plenty of space for sunbathing, barbecues & eating out.

We bought the house in 1988 with a small legacy from my father, who taught French and would have loved the area; the key attraction for me was the waterfall - best swimming I've ever had!

The village is at the border of the coastal plain and the foothills of the Cevennes, in the Languedoc, almost equidistant between the airports of Nimes and Montpellier. It is 10 minutes by road to the nearest town, Ganges, where there are supermarkets, and a great market on Friday mornings. A small river runs through the village, and joins the river Vis, which is perfect for bathing. Beaches at Sete and Agde and Palavas (Montpellier) are about an hour and a half's drive away, but much better swimming for all ages is to be had 8 minute's walk from the house, in the waterfalls and pools of the Vis. The Herault is also good for swimming and canoeing.
