About Pippa

We visited the Dordogne originally around 20 years ago, coming back year after year with our children and fell in love with the area, especially Sarlat and all it has to offer. We finally moved here permanently three years ago and are therefore your first point of contact if you need help or advice. You will be able to draw on our vast local knowledge, which has been acquired over many years, to make the most of your stay in this wonderful area.

Pippa purchased this house in 2013

Why Pippa chose Sarlat la Caneda

Stunning period property with may original features, private pool, mature private garden and Sarlat on foot......... what more could you ask for.

What makes this house unique

This is a wonderful turn of the century period stone town house with good size mature private garden set within an easy 5 minute stroll of Sarlat. La Maison Breuil is situated in a fantastic quiet yet cental location. With only a 3 minute walk to the wonderful boulangeries for your morning croissants and freshly baked baguettes. Everything you wish to sample, restaurants, shopping, sight seeing etc is right on your doorstep. We love to wander into the town purchasing plenty of local produce, Foie Gras, Confit de Canard, Goat cheese etc, saunter back home within minutes and enjoy our feast on the patio watching the locals playing Petanque in the tree lined square at the front of the house, an ultimate French experience.

Guestbook comments from the owner

From 22 March to 5 April 2013 we had a very enjoyable stay at Maison Breuil in Sarlat-de-Canéda. Our party consisted of two middle-aged couples, and a daughter who joined us for the first week.

The house accommodated us comfortably. Sleeping and bathroom appointments were clean and fresh. The linen and towels were of good quality. Even the attic bedroom was adequately comfortable for two with a full bathroom across the landing (mind your head on the door lintels!). The sitting room with television is pleasant, but this we hardly used, preferring the cosy kitchen with its round dining table, chairs and music centre. The kitchen has everything one could reasonably need; much is new, nothing is lacking and all is clean and in good working order. The garden is attractive and clearly well-tended. Unfortunately, on account of the weather (not unusual for this time of year, the temperature was mostly 6 – 16°C and the sky overcast), we could make only little use of the patio and terrace (which would be a boon on sunny days). The swimming pool was covered (none of us would have ventured to swim), but would be welcome in hot weather (apparently abundant in summer).

All in all the property was everything we had hoped it would be. We much appreciated the welcome basket on our arrival as well as the folder with helpful information, including recipes typical of the area and brochures. We also found the free Wi-Fi and landline very convenient. The immediate surroundings are semi-suburban, but tranquil and with a rural atmosphere. The walk into the medieval town, by at least four different pretty routes, is about 800m (about 10 minutes' comfortable walk). We never missed a market day and regularly bought fresh bread from the nearby boulangerie. Sarlat itself is delightful; the architecture is arresting and best seen in the early morning and evening, The surrounding countryside and all the neighbouring towns are charming. Having a car is a great advantage.

About the host and hostess, and management: the property changed hands while we were making arrangements for our stay. The new proprietors, Paula and Stephen, have taken over seamlessly and have in fact effected many improvements, among them substantial refurbishing. In our e-mail contact with them they were unfailingly prompt and very cordial. (We secretly wish they would open other guest houses elsewhere for us to stay at!)

We had a wonderful holiday -

A wonderful stay in Sarlat

  • 5 of 5

This was one of the best holidays we have had in 30 years. The house was elegant, comfortable and very conveniently situated in Sarlat. It was so relaxing to be able to wander into the town, visit a few places, buy a few things to eat and return and sit in the garden. We had a Dordogne golf pass which gave us discount on any rounds after the first. We were sorry to leave and hope to return to this ideal holiday house.

Fantastic house! Perfect for couples or families.

My wife and I were quite pleased with this house. It matched, even exceeded, our expectations. Great location to explore the region as well as the town of Sarlat. The owners provided great customer service--both before we arrived and during our stay. Highly recommend this property to couples (like us celebrating our 38 year anniversary!) as well as families. This was our first time in the Dordogne Region and we thoroughly enjoyed our week here. We particularly appreciated the cleanliness of this house. Plus--everything worked great in the kitchen, the bathrooms and throughout the house. Internet connection was very fast and reliable.

La Maison Breuil is a fantasy house with parking out front, two showers and close to town. It is a great place to stay and a good home base for exploring. And a high speed internet connection with WiFi.

Perfect location and very comfortable beds.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were joined by my sister in law and her husband for two wonderful weeks at "La Maison Breuil " in Sarlat.

Located In a quiet neighborhood , just a short walk to the Medieval town , the property is ideal. The house was clean and well equipped and the beds are very comfortable. The temperature was perfect to enjoy the pool and dinning on the patio. As another reviewer pointed out, there is no freezer. We solve that problem by buying an inexpensive cooler to keep the ice cubes.

The town is simply gorgeous and the region spectacular. There are too many activities and places to visit within an hour drive that a two week stay is not long enough.

Our hosts, Paula and Steve were charming and very helpful.

We plan to return to" La maison Breuil", hopefully very soon.

A comfortable pied a terre in the right location!

We booked the Maison du Brieul as we know the area fairly well but wanted somewhere to stay that didn't always require us to get in the car to get to a restaurant or could walk to a bakery each morning. The other requirement was a pool. The cottage ticked all our boxes, 5 minutes walk into Sarlat, and was very comfortably furnished, lovely comfortable beds and right in the centre of the action in the Perigord Noir. Close to castles , caves, canoeing and everything else you may need. Thank you Paula for a lovely week and professional service, we hope to be back!

Perfect property in the perfect region

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at La Maison Breuil for a week in June. The house is beautiful and fully equipped with everything you might need. There is a large Carrefour supermarket in Sarlat where we bought everything that we needed. We drove to the different villages during the day- most within 10 minutes drive. We also went canoeing down the Dordogne for 3 hours. In the evenings we could walk to town to have dinner in one of the many lovely restaurants. Our teenage boys enjoyed the Dordogne area very much with all the activities available and also enjoyed the pool at the property. The free wi-fi was also great to keep them busy on their iPods. I can recommend this property without any reservations. The house is comfortable and well decorated for a family of four. The booking process was easy and I contacted Paula with a few other questions that she helped me with. We will definitely try to return to this house and the Dordogne region in the future.

Why not enjoy a morning drifting down the Dordogne river in your own canoe, passing Chateaux, Bastides and medieval villages as you go, this is something not to be missed. Take your own picnic and stop off at one of the many beaches along the river, or pull in for a gourmet meal at a riverside restaurant. For those of you feeling a bit more energetic, join one of the many bike tours and see the leafy lanes and valleys. Hot air ballooning and microlight flights can be organised locally for the more adventurous amongst you. There is a 'Tree Adventure Park' near by, which is a great place to go in a group for kids and adults alike. There are also the many local caves including Lascaux and the not to be missed Font de Gaume at les Eyzies with their Prehistoric paintings for you to visit. Sarlat itself offers many free attractions, especially during the summer months, including open air street theatre, acrobats, musicians, art exhibitions, concerts and firework displays.

There are many festivals, fetes and markets throughout the year. From mid July and throughout August there is a Music and Drama Festival in Sarlat, with open air concerts, plays, street entertainers and busking musicians, who will amuse and delight you all for free. Try the summer Night Markets and Gourmet Feast Days where it is possible to sample the food from the region, watch it being cooked before you then sit and enjoy with a glass of local wine in the open air dining areas. During the autumn and winter months you can visit the Truffle markets and search for the famous Cepe mushrooms which grow in abundance in the fertile Dordogne region. Sample the regional delicacy of Foie Gras from the many outlets.

It is all here for you to do whatever your prefer, whether its drifting down the river on a passenger boat or canoe, enjoying a picnic by the river or eating at a Michelin starred restaurant......

Here is one of the many private emails received from guests who have stayed in 2013 : To: Rue Du Breuil Sent: Thursday, 23 May 2013, 15:52 Subject: Re: La Maiso Breuil Hey Paula 4 weeks has gone so quickly and tomorrow we head off! Thank you so much for a wonderful time at your home. Everything we needed has been thought of, and really all we had to do was pick the day trips and restaurants to visit! The only downer of course has been the weather. The guide on our walk through the old town today said he couldn't remember a worse spring in 30 years!! However, the kids did grit their teeth and dive in one day and I am attaching a photo to prove it!!! Thank you also for the thoughtful 'care package' on our arrival. Thanks again and perhaps we will have to come back again another time to prove the weather can be kinder. Best Regards Paul
