CHARMING OCEAN VIEW CONDO @KENANIKAI #216

This second floor corner unit has a very large lanai with a wonderful ocean view. We were able to see the whales from the lanai using binoculars and to watch the sunset nightly. The condo has all the amenities --- dishwasher, microwave, washer & dryer, LCD tv and DVD player. It was very comfortable and had high quality furniture. There are several beaches within waking distance of the unit where we could whale watch or watch surfers. One of the beaches frequently had a monk seal sunning itself on the sand. There were two grills nearby for cooking and there was a lemon tree just beside the unit. We had access to the pool and hot tub which we used almost daily. To our surprise, there were many other fellow Canadians at Ke Nani Kai.

Moloka'i is a very quiet island with limited activities and shopping. Kumu farms on the way to town provides fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables and was regularly visited by us. The mule ride to the leper colony is a must do. Buzzy Sproat was the highlight of the ride with all of his stories. There are very yummy pretzels at the store besides Coffees of Hawaii. You can spend an interesting hour or two at the museum. The Mac farm tour was disappointing. Driving to the Halawa Valley on the extreme east end of the highway was interesting, but a bit worrisome as the road narrows to one lane and you feel quite isolated. Make sure you go during the day and that you have enough gas as you don't want to get stuck.

This is a clean, quiet complex. A great place to get away from the tourists and enjoy a vacation of doing nothing. The unit is clean and has a nice lanai for watching the sunset and sunrise. The elevation of the condo and placement of the unit is optimal for watching for whale activity on the horizon. We predict that in hotter or sunnier weather this unit would be hard to sleep in. There is some road noise as the unit is close to the intersection for Ke Nani Kai and another condo complex but the lanai makes up for it. Basic kitchenware is provided and is clean and free of breakage. We recommend getting your groceries in nearby maunaloa. Its cleaner than the friendly market in kaunakakai and is well stocked. Meat and produce should be picked up at the friendly market in kaunakakai or a local farmer.
Enjoy the variety of beaches nearby- each having a different kind of sand. And if you are lucky as we were, you will spot a few monk seals soaking in the sun on the beaches to the far south.

We had a lovely time at this nice condo, and agree with the other reviews. We especially enjoyed taking a cultural tour into the Halawa Valley waterfall and pool with a Hawaiian native Pilipo Soltario, a storyteller. The Nature Conservancy has three preserves in Moloka'i, two in the mountains and one on the shore where Dusky Shearwaters nest in the little caves in the ground. 700 fledged the first week of December 2012. If you are looking for fresh fish, try the dock, though shrimp are farmed on the island and be bought on the main street, especially on Saturday during the the Farmer's Market, where you can try passion fruit, mangos, and winged green beans. No need to buy lemons during December since the tree near the condo is prolific. Aloha.
