Rainy Adventure on Loon Lake

Our family vacation was accompanied by some sort of rain each day. A total of five inches of rain fell during the week we were there. The cozy, personal touch the cottage provided enabled us to still have a great time. The decor and cabin amenities created a relaxing environment. It was like home away from home! We started each day with a visit to the Shell station on Tenney Mountain Highway where we set up a movie rental account and picked up the newspaper to keep in touch with the weather forecast so that we could plan our excursions accordingly. The folks at Shell were very friendly and also provided directions to the various places we visited. Our time on the lake included some swimming (in the rain too) but I have to say that our dog did more swimming than us. As we cruised along in the boat on the lake we meet some friendly neighbors that pointed out fishing spots and the best time of day to fish. We were also able to fish from shore. Our catch consisted of bass and pickeral. The highlights of our week (besides renting 12 movies) included visits to downtown Plymouth, North Woodstock and Waterville Valley (quaint shops). The rain cleared long enough for us to visit the Polar Caves where my husband and I realized that "We're getting to old for this stuff"! Next, the search begins. Our youngest daughter was on a mission to find a tye-dyed sweatshirt with peace symbols and NH on it. Mission accomplished in Waterville Valley. Next, a second trip (mind you - gas prices) to Clark's Trading Post gift shop for a sweatshirt that my oldest daughter declared on the first trip was too expensive. Lesson learned as my husband declared, "When on vacation and you see something you like - get it because there will be no return trips in the future". Great places to eat in Plymouth are George's Seafood & BBQ and Bad Dawgs. We also found a great breakfast/lunch restaurant in Campton (exit 28 on Rte 3N) called The Stixx. Two of us had breakfast and the other two had lunch. The food and atmosphere were excellant! Needless to say, we had a great time and are planning on returning to Loon Lake in the summer of 2009. In the meantime, we'll be praying for nice weather and sun but know that if the weather does not cooperate we will still have a good time. And yes, the movie rental account will come in handy. Thank you for allowing us to share in your serenity on Loon Lake. We returned to RI well rested.
