Cadenabbia:
Cadenabbia is a popular and naturally beautiful resort destination along the desirable central western shore of Lake Como between the resort towns of Tremezzo and Menaggio. The resort is popular especially by the British during the Spring and Autumn time and is part of the commune of Griante; of which the main historical centre is situated behind the hotel lined facade of Cadenabbia up on the breathtaking hillside.
The Cadenabbia lakefront features elegant hotels, beautiful historical villas and local bars and restaurants to cater for locals and visitors. Cadenabbia is also the site of the first Anglican Church in Italy, built here in 1891 as well as home to the famous stronghold of the infamous Lake Como pirate, ‘Antonio the Crazy’ who occupied Griante Castle during the early 1500’s.
Visitors can enjoy the day here walking along the scenic promenade, visiting the famous Villa Carlotta with its beautiful botanical gardens and fascinating past, enjoy a swim at Cadenabbia’s Lido, relax with an excellent cappuccino and cake in one of the many cafés, enjoy a picnic in the lakeside park in Tremezzo, share a romantic dinner with a loved one at one of the many fine restaurants or take the Cadenabbia car and passenger ferry to Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio.
For those feeling a little more energetic a walk along the Alpine trail up to the San Martino Church is highly recommended. The church is perched high above on the Griante mountainside and boasts spectacular views over Lake Como once you’ve made it to the top!
The historical village of Lenno is also situated very close by and is said to be the oldest on Lake Como. The village features a very pretty lakefront with promenade, bars, and restaurants and a passenger ferry service and Lido. The famous Villa Balbianello is situated on the other side of the bay of Lenno and can be reached by water taxi or by foot through the woodland grounds.
Lombardy - Lake Como Area:
The Italian Lakes are a little slice of paradise. Elegant ribbons of blue water stretch out ahead, folded into the sun-baked foothills, with a spectacular back drop of the snow-capped Alps.
Lake Como offers hidden treasures just waiting for the visitor to discover them: charming corners forgotten by time, lakeside villages where nothing seems to have changed for centuries.
It is steeped in history with an immense collection of churches, architectural masterpieces and works of art covering the centuries. The lake is situated in a basin surrounded by wooded mountains, and offers an extremely varied landscape, with its' shores featuring a succession of pastures, and woods as well as harsh and impressive rock formations.
All this alongside elegant, lakeside villas with sub-tropical gardens, which provide a haven of peace and tranquillity and chic resorts such as Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio and Como itself.
Warming, in spriing and graced with natural beauty, the lakes are still a place to draw breath and wonder. Lake Como, oriented north-south, ringed by characterful old villages often wedged onto narrow beaches between rugged cliffs and water. Those classic lake images of flower strewn balconies, Baroque gardens and splendid waterside villas can be found here in abundance. Dotted around and between the lakes are some of Italy's finest art cities, such as Milan, Verona & Bergamo.
The most romantic and picturesque villages on the lake are Santa Maria Rezzonico, Varenna (15 min by ferry) & Bellagio (8 min by ferry), Lenno (visit Villa Balbianello, location for 007's Casino Royale as well as Villa Gaeta, right here in Menaggio) & Laglio (where George Clooney owns Villa Oleandra).
