Born in the UK, I now work as a commercial diver, so I work all over the world. I now live in California with my young family, so sadly only visit the house occasionally. Its looked after, by my friends Louise and Alastair who live locally.
Louise Stephen purchased this farmhouse in 2006
I bought this house for its fantastic views, and feeling of privacy and space. Its in a hidden, secret part of France, It reminded me of Scotland with good weather! Its in a sparsely populated area, close to skiing ans snowboarding, which I enjoyed, and surfing in summer, The 5 star city of Biarritz is an hour and a half away.
I have been told by clients that I undersell the views from the back garden and front bedrooms. There are tales of clients renting properties listed as having good views, that break the trades description act, here you can be sure of great views.
The house is very private, the house is at the end of a lane, and is not overlooked.
After the recent heavy rains in SW France, the road leading to the house has serious potholes, and this combined, with the steep, hairpin bend lane, means access needs concentration while driving. 4 wheel drive is not needed, however extreme care is needed.
We were looking for somewhere peaceful on the western side of the Pyrenees and weren't disappointed. Alastair met us in the nearby village, led us in then gave us lots of local info and showed us around the house. He was very friendly and welcoming and happy to help by phone / e-mail during our stay.
Views from the main bedroom and garden were stunning and made getting out and about in the mornings difficult! We'd taken our bikes and there were some good rides nearby (hilly, very hilly or some flatter ones). Don't worry about no air conditioning, this farmhouse uses old, tried and test technology instead. The walls are half a metre thick and there are shutters, Closing them when we went out meant when we got back the house was a pleasant 18 degrees inside when it was in the high 20s outside.
It is down a long track so the only caution I'd mention is that a Winebago or low-slug sports car wouldn't be a good choice to take here. But once you get to the end the rural lane, see the views and hear nothing but cowbells and birds you understand what peace and tranquility is all about.
This was our 2nd visit to this property having stayed here in September last year. The house has been sympathetically restored so is a mix of old and new. It is very well equipped with all you need for a comfortable stay. There are lovely views across the valley to the mountains beyond and it is extremely quiet with just the birds and occasional cow bell to be heard. There is an excellent restaurant in the village of Barcus (Hotel/Restaurant Chilo) where we had an outstanding meal with a very good bottle of wine for less than £70 for 2.
On arrival the first time we were met by Louise in the village and she led us up to the house. Our first impression was 'this is scary and we will never find it again'. Untrue, we soon got used to the twisty climb up to the house and could now do it almost blindfold. You do need to be organised as a trip to the village shop takes 15 minutes each way by car. The supermarket in Oloron Ste Marie is approximately 30 minutes away.
We have rented holiday properties for well over 30 years and this is one of our all time favorites. We love it here and although we don't normally return to a property after two visits, we are sure we will be back to this one. If it's comfort, peace and quiet and beautiful views you are seeking, you will not be disappointed here.
Six of us stayed for a glorious week. The weather was good, which helped, but the house was really well equipped, and the area is gorgeous.
Best of all was the double swing in the garden which allowed lots of quality time with grandchildren!
very comfortable home. everything you need is here, and what's provided is good quality, from the beds to the espresso maker to the tv and stereo. the pictures and the listing don't really do it justice. would definitely recommend, and hope to come back.
We were looking for a quiet, peaceful retreat, an authentic french experience, and a few 'adventure outings', and we found it all here! It's just about an hour from the Pau airport, easy to pick up a rental car. The house is located just outside of a village that has everything you need, in a string of the most quaint and picturesque basque farm villages you can imagine. When you return to the house you honestly feel like the only people in the world! Only the sound of the free range cow's bells as they graze in the adjacent fields. Though it's remote, you're hardly isolated! There's so much to see and do, within an hour you can be at the coast, in the mountains, or in Spain! We used the house for some much needed rest and quiet time, then as a center point to explore the area, from sampling the cheese from the local farms, hunting for antiques in the neighboring cities, to a day at the coast and even a trip to Pamplona for paella at one of Hemmingway's haunts! We were two families and we found the house very well appointed and comfortable for our group of 8.
Our stay at this wonderful farmhouse was great. I would highly recommend it, great place to relax with stunning views and plenty of places to visit.
Perfect base from which to explore all that this secret area has to offer, or to simply relax in the garden enjoying the unbelievable stunning mountain views. Activities: the surfing resorts of Biarritz and St Jean de Luz are 75 min drive away, or there is winter skiing from 40 minutes away at the resorts of La Pierre St Martin, Gourette and Cauterets. The area is used for the Tour de France, and there are fantastic local walks from easy to advanced, 1hr to 7 hrs. Excellent rafting, canoeing, fishing and fabulous bird watching. There are fantastic gorges and caves to explore, either at a relaxed level,at La Verna, (which is the 10 th largest cave in the world) with access for disabled, or advanced, underground adventures with full climbing gear supplied, within 25 minutes. There is Local quad biking and 4x4 rental with trails, plus an Ariel walkway woodland adventure centre (full equipment provided).
