Sao Miguel Island Cottage Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms,1 bathroom, sleeps max 5

This stonehouse is professionally managed by Quinta das Acacias.

Welcome to our humble refuge. This cozy home has provided shelter for generations in this peaceful coastal fishing village. Today is no exception if you are searching for a peaceful getaway from the modern busy world you live in.

Enjoy this comfortable yet modest 3 bedroom stonehouse. This home can be your escape into your emotional well being. Open your mind and senses to the sea at your back door.

Take advantage of the terrace for your entire day´s activities… breakfast, then that delicious second cup of coffee and a book, maybe a pre-lunch nap in the morning sun, and then it is time for lunch.

Ah lunch! Now, remember where you are. It is not familiar ground. Sounds different, smells different, and feels different. This can take some planning, but, you know what? It is worth it! Take a white baguette. Not just a white flour thing that came out of the oven brown on the outside. No. It has to look like a pale baguette that has never been sun tanned. Slice and open it lengthways and spread mayonnaise. Not too much, even if you are a mayo lover, you need to hold from this temptation. You spread just enough to taste the tang. Next, lay thin slices of fresh medium ripe tomato, followed by our famous Azorean St. Jorge cheese, the sharp version. Finally the secret ingredient that combines the moment, the atmosphere, the sea and old Europe……fresh, garden grown like nature intended it – basil. Accompanied with a side of olives, not the salty green ones the bigger the better, or the ones stuffed with the pimento that look like a Christmas ornament. No. Look for the container that says mixed olives. They are funny looking, different sizes, pale-greenish brown, purple and black. But, they have the olive oil flavor in them. Frame this lunch composition with an Azorean wine that will complete the moment. Produced in Pico, grown and nurtured in the lava rocks and bathed by the Atlantic sun…….Terras de Lava white 2009 or 2011, red 2011.

Enjoy the peaceful moments of low tide and splash away your tensions in the natural pool.

Finish your perfect day with a BBQ and dinner on the terrace.

Conclude your dinner by watching the sunset on the ocean while savoring the fruity flavors of our Azorean wines or sipping our famous port wine from mainland Portugal.

And to cap it all, reflect on your day as you lay your head on the pillow and allow the murmurs of the ocean at your window soothe your peaceful self into sleep.

Make your reservation early to avoid disappointment!

About Eduino and Bonita Sousa

The Stone house

Many years ago when I left this island with my parents searching for a better life, I left something behind that only recently I have come to realize. While courting my spouse of thirty four years now, I used to talk about returning to my birth place one day and have a house on a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean. A place to reflect, a place to watch the waves dance onto shore, a place to fall into a restful sleep by the sounds of the ocean murmurs. Much like a blanket of soothing words, this connection ties the two together, man and sea.

This cozy stone house, in this quiet village of Mosteiros, has lived this enchanted magic that exists between man and sea. Bound by this magical spell, many of us that have left this place eventually return one by one searching for that little piece of human spirit that was left behind.

I have not found a better way to describe this world called Azores. I can only respond with this, “One has to be here in the flesh and experience it.”

Many books already exist and many more could be written. Yet, with all my heart I believe that words will not describe it.

This magic does not belong to only a chosen few, it is bound to all. However, you will not know it until the time you come together, face to face, man and sea

What makes this cottage unique

-View of the sunsets while you enjoy a glass of wine

-Traditional routine of buying fresh fish, bread and vegetable from the trucks that pass your door everyday.

-Stormwatching during winter season-front seat from your window

Beautiful location with Atlantic view and sunsets

  • 4 of 5

The villa is in Mosteiros, a small picturesque town with very narrow streets. There is on street parking outside the villa and there were always spaces available, even in the peak season when we were there. There is a small supermarket 5 mins walk away which sells all of the basics - food, wine and beer. There is also a local bakery a short drive away. The outside pool is shared with a few neighbours and is fun in the surf at high tide. It was never crowded. There is also some good snorkelling in the bay. The owners provided lots of good advice about where to go and what to do, including whale trips. They even provided a local mobile phone for our stay. The villa has internet access which you have prepay but it wasn't expensive - 10 or 20 EUR for 2 weeks from memory. There are some nice restaurants in Mosteiros selling the traditional, basic Azorean staples. The property was clean and had a decent barbeque although it wasn't that easy to get a huge amount of heat from. The room facing the west does get hot in the afternoon sun so we bought an extra fan to keep us cool at night. We were 2 adults and 2 kids and the villa was the perfect size. It's not luxurious but homely and comfortable. We couldn't find a luxury villa and I'm not sure such a thing exists in the Azores. We would do big supermarket shops in Ponta Delgada and buy wine, beer, cakes, fresh meat and fish at bargain prices. We must have put in a couple of kilos each! Good things to do are whale and dolphin watching, walks, hot springs visits, snorkelling, boogie boarding, Kids are 8 and 10 years old and really enjoyed it. Our flight from Gatwick meant we arrived about 19:00 and, after being met and shown around by Bonita it was about 20:00. Bonita didn't want to recommend a restaurant in the village and suggested we drove 20 mins to another town, the last thing we wanted to do after a long day's travel. The supermarket had closed by that time so I'd recommend either doing a quick shop on the way to the villa or just popping around the corner for some food and drink (which we did and was fine) We stayed 2 weeks which was perfect. Any longer would have been a bit too long. Clear skies are great for star gazing and sunsets were so clear we saw the legendary "Green Flash" just as the sun disappeared 3 nights in a row. I'd recommend it.

Cozy stonehouse with amazong views

  • 5 of 5

Dear Bonita and Ed

As a frequent visitor to various hotels all over, I was more than pleasently surprised in renting the stonehouse. The house itself is located in a truly beautiful spot, and even though one has neighbours, one feels as the house is in a more isolated spot. Needless to say, the views are stunning and it is a close walk to a small shop and the restaurant/cafeterias in Mosteiros. The house has everything one might wish for, eg. BBQ and a fully functional kitchen. Personally I loved the natural pool which water was constantly changed, ie. through the tides coming in.

In addition, Bonita and Ed are outstandingly meticulous when it comes to small details such as meeting up at the airport and even providing a local phone for ones use if needed. Both of you are truly hospitable, and I wish we can return as soon as possible.

I can only give the highest recommendations!

Owner's Response: Hello Kim, Rita and Tuula, Thank you for the great review! The Stonehouse has become a favorite for many guests over the past year. Quaint and traditional but comfortable for long or short stays. The fish, bread and vegetable trucks pass by every day just so one can enjoy fresh at their door just like the people have done for probably over 100s of years. Until your next visit, have a great year! Bonita and Ed Sousa

Pragtfuldt stenhus direkte ved kysten

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful fishing cottage with amazing views!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Ponta Delgada for six nights before heading to Mosteiros for ten days at this wonderful fisherman's cottage. As the description mentions, the cottage is modest BUT the views and spirit are unmatched. The cottage has everything you need for cooking, washing clothes etc, but that is not the draw. It is a very simple house. The amazing sunsets from your deck and the proximity to a natural pool are unmatched. My son, his girlfriend and I went to Sao Miguel to trace our roots. Thanks to Bonita and Ed's careful attention to this accommodation and to the lovely town of Mosteiros, I think we found ourselves!

Stone Cottage, Mosteiros, Azores

  • 5 of 5

What a restful yet rejuvenating setting! Exactly what we were looking for.... a quiet place to relax, reflect and renew. This solidly built stone cottage sitting on the tip of a lava flow facing a raging sea was an excellent place to be reminded of the need to be "planted on solid ground". We were delighted to experience a storm the second night of our stay. The constant roar of wind and crashing surf just below our bedroom window was awesome, yet the security of the sturdy stone construction and proven foundation was never doubted. What can compare to peace in a storm?

This location is not for one looking for high adventure and activity. The island itself has much to see and do but this cottage is situated in a quiet community where there is very little traffic, especially at night. The pace and steadiness of village life has a calming affect.

The ocean-facing windows have an unhindered view. My husband is an amateur photographer who was thrilled with the variable and contrasting sky and sea. The changing tide and "moods" of the surf lent themselves to hundreds of possibilities.

He spent literally hours watching for and catching shots. A sense of hope can grow when different possibilities and options are constantly forming as one waits and considers. Encouragement can come as one has time to consider possibilities, and we certainly found that to be true at this cottage.

Do plan on preparing some of your meals, especially breakfast and dinner. The village has little to offer except for lunches. There are excellent restaurants within 30 minutes, but evening driving can be a bit intimidating on curvaceous roads on foggy or misty nights. The kitchen is quaint but adequately furnished.

For us, the greatest attraction to this choice is the contrast between the solid and sturdy construction of the cottage and the fluid changeableness of the sea. Whether the sea raged or lulled, roared or whispered the house remained unshaken, dry (inside) and secure. We arrived weary and rushed, but soon felt the healing atmosphere of steady and powerful waves beating against firm and established lava flows where someone had established a place of refuge and peace.

Next time we hope to have friends along. The serene and quiet security of the little cottage will lend itself to "letting the walls down" and lead to great conversation.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review . You explained how we felt the first time we arrived at the stonehouse. Close the door to the world and you feel alone with your thoughts. A calmness comes over you and stress is released. We could watch the waves for hours with a coffee in hand. We look forward to you returning and many others staying at the stonehouse looking for that stress-free vacation. Thank you again for taking time to share your thoughts. Bonita and Ed

Within the village of Mosteiros one can enjoy the black sandy beach that is only about 200 meters from the stone house.

There is a convenience grocery store within 50 meters and a pharmacy at about 100 meters. There are a few café bar types where one can get an espresso or something stronger. Two traditional small restaurants in the village offer lunch meals on daily basis, and dinners during the summer months.

If you are a fish enthusiast, you may get the opportunity of buying fresh fish at the port when the local fishing boats come in around nine in the morning.

In the neighboring village of Ginetes, a 20 minute drive, you will find a place called Ferraria, where a thermal spring is found on the ocean´s edge where you can swim in the warm water.

Visit the Azores and come see the green island known as Sao Miguel. Allow your senses to go back in time and let us make this a special holiday for you.
