About Marina Del Bello

I was born in Rome but have lived with my family for many years in Spoleto. I love this little apartment where I lived for a time. It is now available for rental and I enjoy meeting people from all over the world when they visit.

Why Marina Del Bello chose Spoleto

My family owned this building so I restored this apartment.

What makes this apartment unique

I love the quiet sense of retreat from the centre of this beautiful old city and always feel nestled safely here.

Warm and friendly place to stay

  • 5 of 5
Our family of five had a wonderful time staying in Spoleto. Marina opened up her apartment for us and it was more than we could ask for. Very comfortable and inviting.

The apartment was in a wonderful location in town - restaurants, ice cream shops and other shopping. The larger grocery store is a nice walk down the hill (just remember you have to go back up the hill to get home!).

I highly recommend staying here!

The heart of Italy

  • 5 of 5
Fourth visit to Italy staying locally in a flat, fourth time we've been bowled over by the scenery, the friendliness, the food, the wine - oh, everything!

Spoleto makes for a great centre to stay, with lots of places within easy driving distance (I do recommend having a car although you could get by without if the idea of Italian driving/ drivers worries you). Assisi in particular was good; we expected tacky tourism but somehow this was avoided and the place gave us some of the best images of the holiday (husband is a keen photographer). Castellucio was another lovely place, but we wish we could have been there a week or so later when the flowers would have been in full bloom (June). Spello, Amelia, Narni, I could go on - all wonderful, unspoilt and worth visiting.

As for the apartment - just what we wanted! Marina is the loveliest person, so warm and friendly. As others have said, it is her home and it is not a palace, but that is what we loved about it. Right in the heart of town, we could stroll out in the morning for our bread and in the evening for more photos of the viaduct and castle. The flat could not have been better located. OK, you can't park outside the front door and can have a bit of a walk if you go for the free parking at the bottom of town, but it got me fitter and I enjoyed greeting everyone as I tramped up the hill. The walk can be avoided by using the underground car park (5 euros a night) and taking the escalator which brings you up to the square, but we only did that the once when we couldn't get parking on the street.

We tend to 'do' areas pretty thoroughly when we visit so we will probably not return to Spoleto again even though we loved our time there, but I would recommend Marina's flat and the area to anyone seeking 'La dolce vita' and would have happily stayed there for months if I could.

A Bull's-Eye!

A Bull's-Eye!

If you want to live for a week in real Italy, you should stay in an apartment rather than a hotel. If you want to be in a real Italian home but self contained and independent, you should stay in this apartment. This is Marina’s home but we had the use of it for 8 days and we couldn’t have found a better place. We were given the warmest welcome when we arrived. As with most Italians, you arrive as guests and leave as old friends.

If you want to see an old town that is stuffed full of museums and galleries and restaurants, but not tourists, go to Spoleto. If you have a family with different agendas, as we did, you should try Spoleto: as well as the churches & frescos, the Roman amphitheatre and the museums, it is surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountain scenery of the Apennines.

We had decided to hire a car, despite the advice on the website that a car is not necessary, and parking was slightly problematic as the old centre is closed to cars at night which involved a steep climb each day through narrow winding streets to get home. The car proved invaluable for driving round the area and we had some spectacular, and at times edgy, trips on unmetalled roads winding steeply round hairpin bends, between a cliff face and a chasm, at one point having to turn round when the road was blocked by snow. The scenery was breathtaking. But even without a car there would be enough to see in Spoleto for a week, and the town is on the main line from Rome to Ancona so it is easy to get to Assisi and Perugia by train.

The apartment is light and spacious and really comfortable. It is not a shiny, brand-new gold-plated velvet-cushioned showpiece, but a home, and if the odd chipped cup worries you, you may not get on very well in Italy. Marina was delighted to share her local knowledge on where to buy food and where to eat - despite being a city of 40000 it felt like a small community where everyone knew each other.

We were torn between eating out – too many superb restaurants all within 3 minutes from the flat, all serving the local cuisine which is not all pasta & pizza but lovely delicate flavours and lots of truffles… and the local wine (which is enough reason to go back!) – and practising buying local produce in Italian from the little shops, to bring home and cook. There were so few tourists in Easter week that we were recognised the second time we went into any shop, and greeted with broad smiles and a “Buongiorno!” We were very sorry to leave.

Spoleto is a delightful and intimate city which the Italians refer to as a Jewel of a city. It is easy to explore on foot and here are mountain walks accessible via the acquaduct which straddles the gorge beside the city. There is a long tradition of musical and theatrical events in the city and the restaurants cook authentic regional fare which is delicious and inexpensive. The Roman Theatre, the Rocca, the Aquaduct, the Duomo and the winding cobbled streets all invite exploration and there are always bars with panoramic vistas for coffee or an ice cream at hand.

If you want to explore nearby Umbria there are Wineries near Montefalco, cities like Assisi and Spello and Norcia as well as the stupendous mountain plateau, Piano Grande, at Castelluccio. You will need to make a second visit to find time for everything
