Lubec is about as 'Down East' as you can get. It is the easternmost town in the U.S. and home to the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. Whales, porpoises, eagles, osprey, moose and bear inhabit the region. Beach roses, wild iris, and beach peas line the pristine shoreline. In Lubec you will find sandy beaches (a rarity this far Down East), bold coastal cliffs, and wildflower meadows.
The Lubec area is host to three state parks, four lighthouses, a national wildlife refuge, and several nature preserves, all of which offer a variety of well-maintained hiking trails. Local whale, wildlife, and puffin tours offer the chance to observe nature up close from the water, as do local kayak and canoe rental facilities and many public boat ramps. There is a golf course and fresh water swimming near by. You'll find it all here: rich history, spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife, and friendly people. You won't find pollution, crowds, traffic jams, or glitzy souvenir shops.
Other Activities: numerous lighthouses, state parks, nature preserves and hiking trails. Whale watch, wind jammer, and nature tours.
