Tybee is a little-changed beach community that limits building heights to three stories, no high rise condos here. The beaches have recently been re-nourished and are very wide. There is great fishing at your end of the island, in the surf or off of the public fishing pier. Kayaking is available through two tour groups or go on your own. Take a sunset cruise or a boat ride to view the many dolphins. Tybee is known for its growing art and music community. Great restaurants here from gourmet to fresh fried seafood right off of the boat (literally). Tybee is serviced by the Savannah International Airport (40 min away) as well as the Jacksonville airport. Tybee is the closest beach to Atlanta (4 hours) and is only 15 miles over the marsh from historic Savannah, GA known for its architecture, antiques, restaurants and historic squares (also known for 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil).   • Tybee Island is a unique, small coastal barrier island only 11 miles east of Savannah, GA. Approximately 3500 locals call this island their paradise. Beach lovers from all over the world claim Tybee as their paradise, too. Numerous historic attractions on or near the island range from Fort Pulaski National Monument, Fort Pulaski was a Civil War - era fort and is now operated by the National Park Service, to the famous Savannah Historic District, located west of Tybee Island. Tybee is a peaceful 15 minute drive over the marsh from historic Savannah, GA. Savannah is the setting for the popular novel, 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.' and 'Forrest Gump' and is now the home of Paula Deen, famous chef. History is everywhere on this small 2.67 square mile island including Fort Pulaski National Monument. My favorite - North Beach Grill - written up in Coastal Living, Southern Living and more. Groover's for the best and freshest shrimp on the island AJ's Marina for the best sunsets and blackened shrimp and grits. Kids love The Crab Shack with 82 live alligators and a giant life-size alligator for great photos - low country boil. Sting Ray;s for all the UGA fans - great music, too. The Wind Rose Cafe for lunch specials. Sundae Cafe for the best sandwiches/ lunch specials, ice cream and delicious dinners.
