My husband and I both work on the island. I am the art teacher for our public school and my husband owns a window and door business in Chilmark. We raised our son and daughter on Martha's Vineyard. We live about 8 miles from the house.
I inherited the house from my parents, they bought it in 1963. We knew that a location like that would be almost impossible to purchase today. We renovated and expanded it into a year round home because it was in such a magnificent location. My husband and I already owned a home on Martha's Vineyard so we decided to maintain this house as a vacation rental.
While the house is a well heated year round house it always feels like a beach house - the bedrooms have painted wooden floors, perfect for bare feet. You can see the waves, hear the sea and feel the ocean breeze. The large windows were designed to take advantage of the view from every location. On the first floor and on the second floor our huge windows look out toward the ocean, and across our expansive lawn toward our pond. The birding is amazing as the islands are on a migration path and our own pond attracts many species of birds. Aquinnah is so natural that birds have wild vineyards and every other kind of berry to feast upon. We try to keep binoculars and birding books and a feeder at the house. We are at the end of the little road on three acres, so there is a wonderful sense of privacy. Walking from our house to the ocean is just a wonderful experience.
