Amalfi is set in a wide inlet in the mountain. Amalfi is a fascinating town rich in history and, like most of the towns in the area, is made of narrow streets, alleys and labyrinth stairways in which the typical whitewashed houses are embedded. Amalfi was the first Sea Republic of Italy; do not forget to visit the IX century Cathedral dominating the main square with its black and white stone walls.
Amalfi offers sandy beaches, good fish-based cuisine and lively cafés. There is the ferry that comes to Amalfi where you can do wonderful day trips to many of the other popular coastal towns as well as the Isle of Capri.
Another enchanting town situated 350m above the sea level is Ravello, defined by a French writer a place 'closer to heaven than it is to the shore'. The wonderful hanging gardens of the 13th century Villa Rufolo and the charming San Pantale one Cathedral have always delighted the visitors. Wagner, who sojourned there during the composition of his Parsifal, found in this paradise of peacefulness the inspiration for the second act of his work. In the summer months, daily concerts can be enjoyed in the magnificent setting of Ravello’s villas and palaces.
