HEART OF PEAK DISTRICT, NR. BAKEWELL, CHATSWORTH. BUXTON, HOPE VALLEY + MATLOCK

Buxton Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Albertine Barn - sleeps 8, Maigold Cottage - sleeps 4

Brushfield lies on the edge of a limestone plateau area dissected by the spectacular Monsal Dale and Miller's Dale making it a walkers and bikers paradise. It offers challenges for beginners to more experienced activists. Many varied circular walks can be planned straight from doorstep so you have a chance to park up your car and get those legs working throughout your whole stay! Middle Farm is situated on a sunny south-facing hillside high above Taddington Dale. The farm lies in the midst of some of the finest scenery and walking country in the Peak District. Monsal Dale is literally just around the corner and Millers Dale is only a short walk away. The cottages are surrounded by fields and woodland and offer diverse fauna and flora whatever the seasons. It is a bird watchers delight with frequent visitors incuding nut hatches, great spotted woodpeckers, long tail tits, tree creepers, buzzard, sparrow hawk and tawny owl as well as the usual common species. The newly opened cycle trails and tunnels along the former railway line are easily accessible from this base. For the less active it is an ideal central location for visiting all the major attractions in Derbyshire including Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Buxton Opera House, Bakewell, Lathkill Dale and all the numerous picturesque villages in the area. The area around Brushfield has been farmed since Neolithic times. Middle Farm was formerly a tenanted holding under the Duke of Devonshire's Chatsworth Estate.

The outbuildings of the farm have been sympathetically renovated to provide quality, superior holiday accommodation.

Albertine and Maigold have been fitted out to an exceptionally high standard and both offer extremely comfortable spacious accommodation. Many interesting original features are retained with exposed beams and roof trusses, natural stone and reclaimed wood.

Albertine Barn is a two storey conversion providing an elevated position with stunning views across the valley. The cottage is newly decorated and beautifully furnished, with extensive use of pine beams throughout, including exposed trusses in upstairs bedrooms. The accommodation comprise spacious lounge with picture views across the valley, fully fitted dining kitchen with modern appliances including microwave and dishwasher, 2 double bedrooms and 2 twin bedrooms - one of which is on the ground floor. Both double bedrooms can be made into en-suite by locking doors to corridor areas. There are two bathrooms upstairs and a separate shower/toilet on ground floor level. We are the two squashed in the basket on the left hand side! As we like the Peak District so much, we wanted to see what it looked like from above and had an ideal flight from Bakewell in a Virgin Balloon ( generous gift from daughter).

We discovered Brushfield in 1999 and decided that this was the place we wanted to live because of it's spectacular location in the heart of the Peak District. It's in a great rural setting, surrounded by fields and woodland, off the beaten track - yet close to all the amenities and attractions of the area. Initially our children loved it, because of the space and amenities it had. In their teens it was too quiet for them and we were constantly taxiing them around to their social engagements! More recently they love coming back with their friends and partners, to enjoy the qualities that attracted us in the first place! It's also a great home for our two santuary donkeys and our lawn mower sheep.

Brushfield is in an ideal location in the heart of the White Peak - the limestone area of the Peak National Park.

The towns of Buxton and Bakewell are only about ten minutes drive away and each offers excellent facilities with their own unique atmosphere.

There are many excellent picturesque walks from the doorstep. Monsal Dale, with its famous trail, Millers Dale and High Dale are only a short walk away. Walkers can enjoy spectacular views and the opportunity to observe an abundance of wild flowers, animals and bird life.

Middle Farm Holiday Cottages provides a good all year round base for a full range of activities including; rock climbing, caving, horse riding, gliding, fishing, mountain biking, golf and swimming.

Ashford in the Water, just down the road from Brushfield, is a delightful traditional Derbyshire village with all the basic amenities including post office, village store / delicatessen, hotel, restaurant and public house. Enjoy a stroll by the river and across the Sheepwash bridge and be sure to visit the beautiful Church which dates back hundreds of years.

Bakewell, capital of the Peak District is only a few miles away. Agriculture is still the basic activity and the Monday cattle market is one of the largest in the country. It is an attractive market town, so pop in for lunch, take a walk by the river, visit the Bakewell Pudding shop or do a little shopping, it’s well worth a visit!

The Spa town of Buxton with its imposing architecture, beautiful Opera House and Pavilion Gardens is a 15 minute drive away.

Visit the pretty village of Eyam, famous for the plague brought from London in 1665 in a consignment of clothes.

Chatsworth and Haddon Hall are within easy reach offering different insights into the life of a bygone age.

Chatsworth House, owned by the Duke of Devonshire, is steeped in history and full of beautiful works of art. The parks and gardens have been enhanced by famous landscape gardeners such as Capability Brown and Joseph Paxton.

Haddon Hall dating back to the early 1300s is the finest medieval house in the country.

Hardwick Hall now owned by the National Trust has been left largely untouched and is a classic example of an Elizabethan manor house.

Varied Walking: Trails, Dales and Hills

Across the White Peak limestone plateau several disused railway lines have been converted to recreational use for walking and cycling. A walk along the nearby Monsal trail, the former Midland Railway trackbed reveals bridges and other constructional feats that made this line so famous.

The local area is famous for its Dales, offering delightful walks. Dovedale, Mosal Dale and Lathkill Dale are among the few Peak landscapes which have been left entirely untouched by man. On the steep rocky faces of their sides are found some of the rarest and most beautiful plants and insects in the Park.

Much of the nearby delightfully wooded Lathkill Dale is a nature reserve reflecting its ecological value.

Enjoy the wild moors and rocky escarpments of the millstone grit moors of the Dark Peak. Dramatic landscapes and edges: Bleaklow, Blackhill and Kinder Scout. Stanage, Baslow and Frogatt Edge.

Whether you want to simply walk from the cottage or travel further afield there is an abundance of varied and beautiful countryside waiting for you to explore and a host of interesting places to visit as below:
