The perfect "home away from home"
The perfect "home away from home"

My husband and I stayed at Hvalfjordur (Whale Bay) holiday cottage for 8 nights, December 2012. We were delighted that Jakob met us, welcomed us and explained all necessary information about the cottage. The cottage is BEAUTIFUL, inside and out. I appreciated the non-allergy environment, which is tastefully and appropriately decorated with every thoughtful need considered. I loved the festive Christmas decorations and lights! All furniture and beds are comfortable and cozy (you can even see the bay from the master bed!). The kitchen has all tools necessary to prepare meals but, why would you? Go out and enjoy the yummy local fare. The tap water is cold and delicious! We had a family medical emergency unfold back home and were very grateful for the WiFi to receive instant information about our loved one. We considered leaving Iceland early and Jakob kindly offered to do whatever he could to help us. Fortunately, we were able to complete our vacation in this restful and relaxing “home away from home”.
The big windows afford mesmerizing and meditative views in all directions of the quiet bay and striking mountain range directly ahead. Each time we viewed the landscape we saw a completely different scene due to the lighting of the day (sunrise, sunsets, cloudy and mostly clear skies). Located back in the fjord, out on a peninsula, and away from city lights, nearly every night we witnessed the Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights dancing and streaming overhead. It was sheer delight to stand in awe of this amazing gift from above. I melted with a sense of renewal, peace and calm in this heavenly place. I have never seen so many stars in all of my life!
We were blessed with unusually good weather and clear roads so used our limited December daylight hours wisely with daytrips to Reykjavik, The Golden Circle, Geysir Hot Springs, Gullfoss, Blue Lagoon, Town of Akranes, Þingvellir National Park, Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, Vik, Foss á Siðu waterfall near Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Skaftafell National Park, and Jökulsárslón Glacier Lagoon with black sand beach in Vatnajökull National Park.
We bring home many fond memories, new friendships and a sense of well-being. Thank you, Jakob and Elsa, for sharing your home with us. We look forward to exploring Iceland again and would definitely spend more time in this peaceful, restorative, relaxing, calming and beautiful cottage.
