Morzine is a picturesque Savoyard village retaining its traditional chalet-style architecture and local customs. Nestled in a valley in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, between Lake Geneva to the north and Mont Blanc to the south, it provides a wealth of year-round alpine pursuits and entertainment. It is one of the most family friendly resorts in the French Alps offering a wide choice of sporting and cultural activities. Morzine boasts a great variety of shops, boutiques, bars, restaurants and nightclubs, and a weekly market. It has retained its mountain village charm while becoming a leading resort and this is one of the reasons people return year after year.
Morzine is ideally situated at the centre of the Portes du Soleil ski area, arguably one of the largest ski areas in the World, providing easy access into the entire ski area. With over 650km of pistes and 220 lifts there is something for all levels of skiers and boarders. Snowboards are much in evidence in and around Avoriaz, which has become the unofficial snowboard centre for the Alps, particularly evident in “The Stash”, the first giant ecological snow park in Europe. The Portes du Soleil is continuously improving their ski area with the upgrading of lifts and investment in infrastructure. Snow is guaranteed on the main slopes by a vast network of snow canons, however, the Porte du Soleil has an enviable snow record over the past 10 years. There is a free bus service which runs around the town to make sure that there is never too far to walk in order to get to a lift station. During the winter, whilst the main focus is the snowy mountains there is still plenty to do if you don’t fancy skiing. Morzine now boasts a new indoor pool with spa complex which is open throughout the year.
During the Summer, Morzine comes alive once more for a huge array of outdoor pursuits whether it is mountain biking on the extensive trails (serviced by the lifts which reopen in the summer), hiking, swimming at the outdoor pool complex, the new water park in Avoriaz, road biking (Dauphiné and Tour de France visit the area), horse riding, tennis, white water rafting, summer luge, 11 tennis courts, 2 golf course, adventure park, ice skating and Montriond lake all on the doorstep even before you venture down to Lake Geneva ;a mere 25 minutes by car; for a day at the beach or for lunch in the medieval fishing village of Yvoire.
Morzine, in contrast to many other alpine ski resorts, is a town in its own right with a life all year round. As a result you will find a full range of shops, bars, cafes, hotels and restaurants whenever you decide to visit. Morzine is particularly proud of the great range of restaurants on offer, with prices to suit all needs and food to suit all tastes. It makes Morzine a perfect destination for a Winter or Summer self-catered holiday in France!
