The farmhouse rests on a quiet hillside overlooking the Rhone valley, a few miles from Rochemaure village with its spectacular cliff top château. 7km away, across the Rhone river and into the Drome is Montelimar, a bigger town famous for its production of the confectionery nougat. The Drome itself is famous for its fruit orchards, lavender fields and olive tree plantations.
Back into the Ardeche, there are local vineyards and markets, medieval and Roman villages and the spectacular gorges of the Ardeche to explore. This is an amazing place for hiking, canoeing, wild swimming, walking ancient cobbled streets and sampling local produce.
For a little wine-tasting, follow the Rhone south into Provence to find Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas and the best of the Cotes du Rhone vineyards. Roman architecture and ruins abound - from the nearby village of Alba-la-Romaine to the famous Provençal cities of Orange, Avignon and Arles. A 2-hour drive will get you to Aix-en-Provence, Montpellier, or a dip in the Mediterranean sea.
