About Paula or Bruce

We live in Michigan most of the time, but love our getaways to Grand Cayman, where we once again remember who we are - without all the daily accoutrements and stresses of our ordinary busy lives. The magic happens the minute you step off the plane and hear the steel drum band playing, smell the fragrant air and feel the breeze blowing as you arrive at Owen Roberts Airport.

Paula or Bruce purchased this condo in 2001

Why Paula or Bruce chose Grand Cayman

We purchased Lucky Dog Sea Lodge after vacationing at the Sea Lodges of Cayman Kai in the late 1990's. It only took one time to fall in love! This place has a special vibe that is totally unique.

What makes this condo unique

Ocean views from every room in this quirky 1960's built white peaked roof, Fred-Flintstone-reminiscent abode make it the perfect island haven! Here you have a sense of living indoors/outdoors in tandem with nature on the sand and sea and this feeling became a standard we could not find anyplace else. Lucky Dog Sea Lodge gives a one of a kind experience.

If you like the quiet life, this is the place for you. We were picked up at the airport and taken to the grocery store then right to the condo. It was everything that was advertized and more. It was clean and well maintained. I like the fact that there is no air conditioning, but you don't need it because of the tropical breezes that seem to always be blowing. Paula is wonderful to work with. We have stayed there twice and plan on going back again. I would highly recommend this property.
What more could you ask for than snorkeling 50 feet from where you are staying. The beach is never crowded. We have always had a relaxing wonderful time while there.
If you go, you need to go to the Sunday barbeque at the Driftwood Bar. It is very good, but make sure you get there early because the ribs go fast. Rum point is just down the road and is beautiful. It is close enough to walk to. You can snorkle or just relax and have a drink or lunch. It is also a wonderful place to watch the sunset. If you don't like crowds, stay away from Georgetown especially when the cruise ships are there.

Beautiful beachfront condo! Loved the pleasant theme of pastel colors spread out on the furnishings. Waking up to the soft breeze of the Caribbean morning was an irreplaceable moment. The beach was irresistible. Had a warm and friendly neighborhood. Absolutely loved the whole place!

Wonderful Stay at the Lucky Dog Sea Lodge

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from a fantastic 5-night stay at the Lucky Dog Sea Lodge celebrating my husband’s 50th birthday. We wanted to stay in a quiet area as close to the beach as possible with access to snorkeling right off the beach. Lucky Dog offered all of this and more!

There are fantastic views of the ocean from the living room, kitchen, bedroom, and screened-in porches. The beach is just steps from the unit, and there are palapas and beach loungers available. We found good snorkeling right off the beach, and there’s plenty of reef extending from the Sea Lodges to the Rum Point area to keep a person busy for days.

The back porch facing the ocean extends the living space into the great outdoors. We drank our morning coffee while watching the sunrise, ate lunch in the shade of the umbrella, and enjoyed dinner under the stars. The back porch is screened on the sides and top which keeps the insects out while opening this space to expansive views.

The kitchen was well-stocked with cookware, utensils, and a basic selection of spices. We shopped at Foster’s Food Fair and Hurley’s (both near the airport), and the little cooler in the Sea Lodge was useful for the grocery trips. There are other grocery and convenience stores closer to the Sea Lodge but we timed our shopping with a visit to the well-stocked pharmacy near the airport.

The Lucky Dog was immaculately clean and comfortable. The towels, sheets, and furnishings, particularly the king-sized mattress, are of high quality. There’s an abundant supply of bath and beach towels. The futon in the living room was comfortable and perfect for afternoon naps. We didn’t use the DVD player but did find the local cell phone to be helpful when calling for restaurant hours given that some were closed or had restricted hours in the low season.

Although there were constant breezes, it was hot on the island (it was August after all!), and we were grateful for the a/c in the bedroom. We can understand why a/c wouldn’t be needed in the cooler months, though. The unit is an ‘open air’ design with louvered doors on both sides for fantastic cross ventilation from the ocean breezes.

We’ve traveled extensively in the Caribbean, and our stay at the Lucky Dog Sea Lodge ranks as one of the best. The Sea Lodge is lovingly and thoughtfully maintained, the location is perfect for a quiet getaway on the beach with access to snorkeling, and we found the island vibe overall to be welcoming. We can’t wait to return!

Delightful Beach Cottage

  • 5 of 5
I just came home from an amazing 4-week stay at the Lucky Dog Sea Lodge and I am already making plans to return. This beach cottage was everything promised on the website and more; great snorkeling out front (check out http://snorkelblog.tumblr.com for details), a quiet setting with friendly neighbors, and morning views of the sunrise from the bedroom windows. It was clean and the furnishings were cozy and confortable – everything I wanted in a beach cottage.

I never turned on the bedroom AC – the ceiling fans and trade winds blowing through the wooden louvered doors and windows kept me cool (even though the beginning of my stay was a little hot and steamy). The sea lodge was well equipped with a comfortable bed and futon, quality sheets and plenty of towels and beach towels.

I spent a lot of time on the screened lanai (facing east) watching the sea break over the reef. The beach out front was cleaned once a week; there were some rocky areas and water shoes were needed for getting into the sea to “play.” There were lounge chairs and covered areas (plus a large umbrella at the sea lodge) for use on the beach.

The wifi connection was a little slow at times, but since I was on “island time” I didn’t care. They provided an island cell phone that I took with me when I left the Sea Lodge.

Rum Point is about ½ mile west and I went there to snorkel, play in the water and have a few Rum Punches. Over The Edge (in Old Man Bay) is a great place for dinner – a copy of their menu is available at the Sea Lodge (as are other area restaurant menus).

Paula was wonderful to work with – she answered my emails promptly and provided answers to all my questions. Barbara, the island manager, was just a cell-phone call away if I had a problem. She also purchased (for a small fee) some food for me prior to my arrival and cleaned the Sea Lodge twice (for another fee) during my stay. Because she also manages several other Sea Lodges she was on-site almost every day if I had a question.

This was the best stay on Grand Cayman that I have had in 20 years. Thank you, Paula and Bruce!

You will be vacationing at the Sea Lodges of Cayman Kai - a small and intimate condo grouping that is directly on the ocean in the peaceful, private north side of Grand Cayman Island. The quiet side! Sting Ray City can be visited by boarding the boat out from Rum Point, less than a quarter mile walk down the beach. You can also drive to the Queen's Botanical Park within about fifteen minutes for a leisurely stroll through Caymanian nature. The Turtle Farm is a must-see if you have children with you. It's in the West End, about an hour's drive across and up the west peninsula of the island. Pick up the Tortuga Rum Cakes whenever and wherever you see them. They come in a variety of delicious flavors! Check with Ocean Frontiers for their snorkel or dive trips or walk down to Rum Point to Red Sail Sports if you need to rent some snorkel equipment for the trip.

This is not a resort; wrong side of the island... we are laid back and casual here.

Kaibo Yacht Club and Rum Point's Wreck Beach Bar with music a short 1/4 mile walk/drive away. Visit the Sunday BarBQue at the funky Driftwood Bar, meet the locals, enjoy other fine dining nearby, local convenience store, gift shops, tennis courts nearby and much, much more.
