About Michael Luke or Elizabeth Gensler

I am originally from the San Diego area of Southern California. I grew up by the beach and have always enjoyed the life style and abundance of outdoor activities that ocean living provides. In 1978, just 6 months out of high school, I embarked on a 6 month surf adventure, traveling throughout most of the countries in Central America. I was immediately drawn to the people, culture and raw beauty of the land. It was an experience that changed my life. After returning to the states, I dreamed of some day owning a home in the tropics of Latin America. In 2004, I realized my dream by purchasing this magnificent property in the Pavones area of Costa Rica. So far ownership in the tropics has been an incredible experience, an experience I hope everyone has the opportunity to enjoy. Life in Pavones is 'Pura Vida'.

Michael Luke or Elizabeth Gensler purchased this villa in 2004

Why Michael Luke or Elizabeth Gensler chose Pavones

The area of Pavones and the Osa peninsula have been relatively untouched by development. It is a place where you can go to experience world class surfing and fishing, while being surrounded by broad variety of plants, animals, birds and marine life. It's like being in a zoo without cages. I love the rugged beauty of the area, culture and beautiful nature of the people.

What makes this villa unique

The view of the ocean and mountains is incredible! I really enjoy being able to view a variety of wild life from the house or while wandering the property. The house is easily accessable from the main road and is in the safe and secure neighborhood of Cuervito de Pavones. The property is loaded with fruit trees which make great morning, afternoon or evening snacks. You may be in the jungle, but you won't miss the modern conveniences of home when staying at Paraiso de Miguel.

I wish I had more than 5 stars to rate my stay and vacation at Paraiso de Miguel! To say it was amazing does not even begin to explain just how incredibly wonderful it was! The location is beautiful with a view clear out to the ocean. The grounds are well kept and the fruit and other treats growing are exceptional. The property was very clean and had everything needed and then some to feel comfortable and "at home", even while away on vacation. Although the location is surrounded by dirt roads, the quads and 4 wheel drive make getting around even more fun and adventurous! Furthermore, the outdoor kitchen and brick pizza oven show their attention to detail and great cooking options. Also, there is a small creek and waterfall that can even be walked to on the property. For a little "me time" and to wind down, there are 5 hammocks located around the property to enjoy.

The activities available to enjoy while staying at Paraiso de Miguel are very well organized and ease of payment makes everything so accommodating. I had only paddle boarded one other time and this was like nothing ever experienced. The water was calm, blue and warm with beautiful ocean ahead and a beach view from the ocean that was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. The next day, we went horseback riding that took us from the property to the beach and back through the jungle on a very steep but doable and scenic trail. There was a day that we chose to just relax and get pampered. Massages were arranged on the property and Rosie, who performs the services, is great at what she does, as well as being professional and just sweet as can be. Another day we went on a guided waterfall hike. The surrounding areas are so lush with trees and the guides were knowledgeable and accommodating. We first hiked to the top of the water fall and were able to look down at this amazing wonder, then back around to the bottom of the waterfall allowing us to swim in the pool that collected below. One of our final excursions was zip lining in Golfito. I had never done this before and it was so exhilarating!! Our guides were so kind and informative, putting all my fears at ease. There were 10 runs with the longest being 500 yards and the tallest being 150 yards up. The zip lines were in the rainforest and the views truly took my breath away.

I would recommend this vacation for anyone looking for adventure and a getaway not experienced in any other place I have ever visited!!

Owner's Response: Wow, Heather, what a great review. Thanks so much and what made it so fun was your enthusiasm and willingness to try anything and everything. For a first-timer in beautiful Costa Rica you got to experience a great deal of what is offered down here and you did it laughing and squealing all the way! I'll never forget hearing your echoing sqeals as you zip-lined through the top of the jungle. Once again, a very happy birthday to you and I'm so glad we were able to gather our close friends (and a few of the local monkeys!) and give you a proper Tico style birthday party during your stay. We are looking forward to your return visit and showing you and your husband even more of what this country has to offer. I know you'll never be the same after having experienced the Pura Vida that permeates this amazing place.

Paraiso en Pavones

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful property sits high above the ocean offering expansive views and exquisite sunsets. The house is spacious, the furniture is comfortable, the relationship of the indoor and outdoor spaces work well, the kitchen has the necessities to cook efficiently and the house and grounds are very clean. All of this in a very remote area which makes it all the more remarkable. Mike and Elizabeth are good people with kind and generous hearts. They know the area very well and can arrange all of your adventures including those you have not even thought of! Don't be afraid to ask questions. The price is very fair for the home as are the costs of the local activities. It is a twenty minute drive in a 4x4 to the closest surfing beaches yet so worth it. And finally, if you want to experience Paraiso en Pavones, book now before someone else does. You will be glad you did!

Owner's Response: It was a blast having you and Oscar as our guests. Our boat trip to Los Mogos for a day of snorkeling and stand up paddle boarding was epic, but the afternoon lobster snack on the disappearing island off Golfito and the return trip through the Rio Coto mangrove canal really capped the day. We know that you are already planning a return trip to experience our green season and we hope that this visit includes a kayak trip down the Rio Coto to view the countless # of birds, wild life, flora and fauna and take a hike to the beaches of Punta Banco and the Burica Peninsula to experience the multitude of waterfalls along the journey. Pura Vida and Hasta Pronto.

Dear Michael and Elizabth,

Thank You for a really great trip. You have truly created a special place. I will never forget the trip into the bay or the quad tour and your warm hospitality made us feel as though we had come home. For anyone wanting to stay in this region, Paraise de Miguel is top notch. The house is comfortable and functional with a fantastic view and surrounded by nature. I will certainly return as soon as possible. Two weeks was just not enough. Gracias y Pura Vida.

Owner's Response: Cory, it was great having you and the family stay with us during your Costa Rican vacation. Now that you bought property near by, we'll be looking to see more of you in the future. Next trip, we need to get out and do some off shore fishing. Nothing like the taste of fresh BBQ Dorado after grilling in our outdoor kitchen. Pura Vida

El Paraiso de Miguel is a hidden paradise gem. Not only was our refrigerator stocked when we arrived with all of our asked essentials but the grounds contained fresh vegetables and herbs for the taking. The owners were always willing to arrange local adventures and were well known by the locals. Local adventures include, horseback riding (beach to jungle), beautiful waterfall hikes, zip lining (Golfito) and playing horseshoes at the local bar(SOL Y MAR) where they serve the best fish tacos and homemade hot sauce! They kept an itemized list of all food and adventures (including tip, per our request) so we did not have to worry about carrying cash and could pay them directly at the end of our stay. Beautiful property and Beautiful people!

Owner's Response: Thanks, Amy! We had a great time during your stay, from your enthusiastic participation in our pizza party bonanza to your serene appreciation of our incredible sunsets. We certainly packed a lot in during your stay, paddle boarding the gulf, horseback rides through the jungle, waterfall hikes, quad rides and zip lines. But believe it or not there's so much more to experience...you'll have to plan another trip soon!!!

An adventurous Costa Rican Holiday at El Paraiso de Miguel

  • 5 of 5

For those who seek an adventurous vacation coupled with leisure and relaxation, You can't get any better than this secluded and scenic paradise. Our host made sure we had all of the amenities to make our stay comfortable, yet provided a significant amount of adventurous options to fulfill our thirst for activities. We arrived during a holiday weekend, yet the secluded nature of the rental property in the southern pacific zone of Costa Rica allowed us to avoid all potential tourist distractions. Within the week, we (a couple in our mid-twenties) had had a healthy dose of everything Costa Rica has to offer. We fulfilled our quest for unbounded nature with waterfall hikes and river tours, saw enough wildlife to make any zoologist envious, and enjoyed the greatest scenery both the jungle and beaches could provide. The adventure we craved was satisfied by horseback riding, surfing and paddleboarding, fishing, and ziplining. Our host provided us with the option of ATV rentals, which provided an extra layer of excitement for everything we did. This was an all-around fantastic vacation and our host was gracious at every turn.

El Paradise de Miguel is far from many of the common tourist areas in Costa Rica. This provides for the seclusion we wanted, but warrants extra travel time; The roads were not paved, and a 4WD truck or SUV is a necessity; either that or rent the ATV's from the host.

The seclusion also makes for a tough time for picky eaters; Our host was kind enough to fill our fridge with many different foods and snacks, and the restaurants were within driving distance, but the nearest supermarkets do not have the best selection of potential foods.

Our host lives on a working farm, located on a large hill. While mobility is not a necessity, the ability to move around and explore greatly enhanced our experience.

Owner's Response: Hey Chris, Thanks for the wonderful review. Having you and Jess here for our annual New Years Eve pig roast was certainly a great way to start off your Costa Rican adventure. You guys fit in like family, which made the event and your 10 day stay even more special. We appreciated your contributions to the farm during your visit and to our final evening sunset beach BBQ by catching the tuna and wahoo for our meal. Nothing like BBQ'd fish over an open flame on the beach while watching the sun sink into the ocean. Oh, and we can't forget the smore's for desert. Yum! We hope to have you and Jess visit again soon and return with your energy and adventurous spirits..
