This exceptionally nice, renovated converted carriage house sits on a private 250 acre estate. All windows overlook undisturbed fields, mountains, and the Woodstock valley. It is completely furnished, has outside deck with beautiful views, a slate floor ski/mud etrance, and doorstep parking. Convenient to several ski areas (Killington, Suicide Six), downtown Woodstock, great restaurants, shopping, fishing, hiking, Mt Tom National Park, Quechee, and other scenic Vermont areas. Come enjoy the serenity of a visit to the Woodstock area.
Property: The rental is a renovated Carriage House once used to house the horse caretaker. The rental is across the street from the Main house with plenty of privacy. The surrounding 250 acre property is private and undeveloped. There is a small farm with seasonal horses and cows. During the summer months cows graze some of the distant fields as well. There are multiple secluded ponds that can be fished for trout or to view deer, ducks, birds of prey and other wildlife. The property has miles of private hiking trails as well as extensive gardens that have been featured in local publications as well as highly sought after by artist looking for landscape painting and gardening enthusiasts. Guests are welcome to make use of the entire natural property!
I am an avid gardener who enjoys every inch of the property. I am a clean freak who always makes sure things are in perfect condition.
Andrew or Margarete Pierce purchased this house in 1930
Unparallel in its beauty, location, offerings, and stewardship. The property has been featured in many local and occasionally national media for its gardens and quintessential Vermont beauty.
Private 250 acres of pristine property with nature trails perfect for summer and fall walks and winter cross country skiing and snowshoeing. All this just two miles away form the resort town of Woodstock.
The Carriage House was impeccable and Margarete is just wonderful and so very helpful. The property was a wonderful place to explore even in the snow for this Floridian family. The Carriage House was a home away from home type of feel, very comfortable, had everything you needed and the view is stunning. This is a true treasure, a great find.
Woodstock and the surrounding areas are just beautiful. We enjoyed shopping at the Farmers Market and taking a few day trips. The covered bridges in the area are just stunning.
We can't wait to return. We loved and enjoyed our holidays in Woodstock and at the Carriage House.
We loved our stay at Margarete's Carriage House in Woodstock ,Vermont.
The location was perfect with amazing views .We could walk into town and Billings Farm.
Margarete and Reilly(a lovely Chocolate Lab)were delightful and made us feel at home .She suggested some great restaurants. Our favorites were Prince and Pauper and Simon Pearce.
Her gardens are beautiful and Neighbors are wonderful.
This is truly a special spot. We can not wait to come back to this lovely part of the world.
Me and my wife honeymooned at the Carriage House in March. Margarete was a great host. She is very welcoming and attentive to needs of her guests. The time my wife and I spent there was wonderful. We couldn't have asked for a more picturesque place to stay. The mountain views, the snow fall, the maple syrup buckets hanging from the trees, the back road drives all made for a wonderful time. The small town of Woodstock is very nice and comforting with all the amenities one would need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. I would highly recommend the Carriage House to anyone who is interested in a quiet, private, scenic place to stay that is very centralized and makes a perfect spot for short 1 day trips to most anywhere in Vermont. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and look forward to getting back one day in the future.
There are so many details about our New Year's week stay at the Carriage House that could be described here. But to keep it simple... it was fantastic! Descriptors that best describe our experience are: welcoming, gracious owners, impeccably clean, attention to detail, home-away-from-home, beautiful landscape, great views from windows, peaceful, convenient location, therapeutic, quiet, friendly neighbors, and pleasant walks.
We had a wonderful time and hope to visit again soon!
My husband & I are from Florida and decided to honeymoon in a cold climate to get away from the heat and see some real Fall weather.
My husband is Florida born and raised and I am a New Englander, so I needed to spend some time back in my area of the country.
We saw this property on this site and knew we had to rent it for a week.
We were not at all disappointed. The pictures don't do this property justice, it's seriously like a scenic picture from a magazine.
It's on a private unlit road surrounded by woods with farms and houses and cows sprinkled here and there.
Once you get to the carriage house, the scenery opens up to acres of fields and a breathtaking view of the valley and mountains, which you can see from the balcony. I wish I could have taken that view back with me to flat Florida.
The carriage house is immaculate with real wood floors and real wood walls in the living area with exposed wood beams on the ceiling.
It feels like a home away from home, completely furnished with everything you need to stay in and relax or cook, apart from the food, of course.
There are several farmers markets in the area that sell fresh local grown food, which in my opinion, taste better than the usual grocery produce.
Woodstock itself is like walking into, as my husband put it, a Charles Wysocki puzzle. (If you don't know his puzzles I suggest you look it up, very Americana/small town).
Historic houses lined with Autumn trees, the smell of burning wood, very quiet roads with hardly any cars, a great downtown area with shopping and restaurants unique to the area.
Since we were there for Halloween, we got to join in on a cemetery walk with actors pretending to be historic residents and then a lecture on the areas "vampires".
Just 15 minutes away or so is Quechee, VT with all the antique shops you could want and more restaurants to choose from.
It even snowed one morning, something my husband never saw in person, which was special to us.
It's hard to put into words this town and the carriage house, you just need to be there and experience it.
Now that I'm back in Florida I miss driving around the area and being around what seems to be the living and breathing history of that town that is still very much felt.
If we were to go back, I know what house I would have to rent. The carriage house is a great experience all on its own.
We thoroughly enjoyed our month long stay at this beautifully appointed Carriage House. It is situated in a quiet and scenic valley, just up the road from the Village of Woodstock. Views of bucolic meadows, colorful flower gardens, woodlands, and surrounding mountains, as seen from the dining area's large picture window or from the deck certainly wows the senses. The house is nicely decorated in comfortable and stylish furniture, and the light knotty pine floors (throughout the house) and in the main living areas are highlighted with decorative paintings, open bookcase with various family treasures and floor rugs that accent the rooms' furnishings. A large selection of books is available in the tall glassed breakfront cabinet in the living area of the house. Both bedrooms are quite large with plenty of closet space for all of our clothes and belongings. The wireless (secure) broadband internet access was really appreciated as well as the direct tv set up and CD/ipod/radio player.
Margarite, our gracious host and owner of this beautiful house, welcomed us to her gorgeous "slice of heaven" and made us feel so comfortable during our entire stay. This talented gardener has enhanced the beauty of her property by working very diligently on creating and maintaining multiple flower gardens, both around the carriage house and the grounds around her house (situated across the road from the carriage house). She welcomes you to enjoy the ponds, all of the gardens while sitting on Adirondack chairs overlooking one of the large ponds or simply walking around enjoying the beauty of her property.
While we certainly were very comfortable enjoying our house, one must take the opportunity to enjoy the quintessential village of Woodstock and the surrounding environs. Exploring brought us to many local artisan cheese makers, Garden on the Green in Woodstock, microbreweries, quaint country stores and villages, covered bridges and lakes. Enjoy the gateway to Vt's rural heritage with a visit to nearby Billings farm and museum or the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park and mansion. For a night or more of dining out, we recommend Cloudland Farms, located a few miles up the road, with it's delicious fix prix dinners and the Prince and the Pauper in Woodstock.
All in all, we were so happy to find such a treasure of a place to stay while visiting our former home state of Vt and highly recommend paying a visit and staying awhile at Margarite's lovely Carriage House
