Our Home away from Home

I was in Rotterdam for research at the university. My family came with me. I have five children, ages 2-10, so we're a big family. For several months this was our home away from home and it served us very well. The apartment is beautifully furnished, well-maintained, and in a great neighborhood. There are a number of bakeries, restaurants, and other shops representing the food and goods of various corners of the globe all within walking distance. There are a number of parks and soccer fields nearby as well, which we visited regularly. The neighborhood is safe and quiet and a grocery store with all you need is only a few blocks away. Rotterdam is really a special city and the neighborhood represents a lot of what is makes it so. As far as transportation goes, Schiedam Centrum is a ten-minute walk or a short bus or bicycle ride away for the Metro and trains, which can get you anywhere you want to go in they city or the Netherlands. There are bike lanes throughout the neighborhood and to all of the main places one might go if you decide to buy a secondhand bicycle or rent one (I recommend doing so--it's an experience cycling in the Netherlands). Rotterdam Centraal and the city center are also easily accessible by bus or bicycle. The bus stops conveniently next to the building, which is great if you're running a little late or want to know what time the next bus is coming (you can see from the window, because there is a nice digital sign). The owners are wonderful, helped us learn our way around the city, regularly checked to make sure we were happy and our needs were being met, and put careful attention into getting the apartment ready for our family. We could not be more thankful for all the help they offered us. I would certainly recommend this property to others and hope to stay there again if I return to the university for further study. We will never forget our time there and I'm sure that other guests, especially those who are there for an extended stay and get to know the neighborhood and city, will feel the same way.
