The McGovern Family Farmhouse is located at the foothills of The Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT. Skiing, snowmobiling , shopping and dining are all within a 10 minute drive. The house is a restored 1850's farmhouse. The wide pine and maple floors are over 150 years old. There is a new country kitchen with room for multiple cooks, a large dining room, two living areas one with a woodstove, a rec room with a ping pong table, a large mud room, laundry room, and two full baths. We are very interested in offering rentals to families or groups of families. We welcome children of all ages.
We stayed here in December of 2014 for 3 nights and had a very nice time. The location is ideal as it is nearby the Von Trapp Lodge and allows for easy access to the Stowe mountain and downtown Stowe (plus all of the roads are paved, no dirt) There are a number of bedrooms so it was very easy to give everyone their own space.
The house is clearly a family getaway and is very well stocked but still felt clean and welcoming. There are sheep and chickens on the property also. This was only a good thing (no noise or smells) and we actually were able to get farm fresh eggs one morning when one of us was brave enough to retrieve them!
We were very fortunate to find this property which was a perfect location for our respective families to gather over the holidays. My sister and family traveled down from Montreal and my brother-in-law and family traveled up from New York City. We flew out from California and found it was very easily accessible from Burlington Airport. The house was secluded enough to be very private, but close enough to Stowe and other local ski resorts and of course the town's various delicious restaurants. We also did the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory Tour which was a lot of fun.
Having only read one review of the property, we weren't sure what we would find, but we were pleasantly surprised at the charm and coziness of this home. The kitchen was very well equipped and and wonderfully spacious for creating delicious meals. The owners were very kind and left us plenty of wood for the wood burning fireplace, fresh eggs from the chickens on the property, and snowshoes so we could go trekking in the fresh snow and burn of a few calories.
The kids had a blast running around the property seeing the sheep, chickens and bunnies. And the rest of us grownups enjoyed sitting around the fire, cooking gourmet meals, drinking wine, watching movies (they have a great selection of films) and generally relaxing. Highly recommended.
Good simple family owned home. All came as promised EXCEPT internet and a few minor things which is the only reason I give it a 3 instead of a 4. We had 12 adults staying in it and 16 to dinner and never felt cramped. A little lacking on the luxury side but more than made up for it with a reasonable price and lots of the "basics" (kitchen, etc) that rental properties often lack. An overall good experience. Could use a better living room space setup but combined kitchen/dining room/family room was awesome for cooking eating and hanging. Nice big mud-room for ski boots and jackets. Downstairs (sort of) master bedroom is COLD and could use better heating ventilation. Ping pong table a great touch. There was supposedly an issue (said owners) with the amount of hot-water but we never encountered it - just don't have everyone taking showers and running the dishwasher at the same time. It was no problem at all. Owners were fair and straightforward. Again awesome kitchen if you like to cook. Needs a gas grill though, charcoal is a tall order in -5º weather.
Hundreds of acres of fields and forests abuts the property offering privacy and access to trails to explore by foot, bike or skis. Nebraska Valley is tucked away from the bustle of town but just a minutes drive to downhill and cross country facilities.
