Overview

County Kilkenny House Rental Photos and Description

200 Year Old Townhouse Adjacent To King's River

Riverside location on the banks of King's River. There is a superb south facing riverside terrace and garden. Minute walk to the 9 pubs, shops, restaurants. Delightful river views from most rooms. This 4 bedroom townhouse offers the best of both worlds - romantic riverside setting with lovely views of King's River and Bridge (circa 1800) whilst being situated in the heart of historic Callan town. Inside Bridge Houses are 2 floors: ground floor comprises hall leading to a large kitchen, separate dining room with patio doors to a large riverside terrace, lounge, reading room and separate wc. Upstairs there are 2 single bedrooms and 2 double (both king-size beds), all with built in wardrobes, plus main bathroom with shower cubicle, toilet and basin. There is a large south facing riverside terrace to the back with steep steps down to a riverside paved patio and large stone walled lawned garden with hard standing for a car.

River views from most rooms. Lovely south facing riverside terrace accessed via dining room patio doors. Steep steps down to south facing riverside lawned garden and patio area. Electric central heating and electricity. Children are most welcome but PLEASE NOTE: Due to the proximity of the river to the property, young children MUST be supervised at all times whilst in the garden and terrace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a fantastic time at bridge house the view was stunning loved sitting on the terrace watching the river. We used the library for relaxing with a cuppa in the earlie evening before watching t v in the comfortable sitting room at night. Kilkenny is a beautiful city and would love to return soon.

Nice view, not a great value

  • 3 of 5
While the house does have a nice view of the river, we had the same issue with the musty smell. We opened the windows, which helped, but then the noise of cars driving by the rooms that faced the street kept us up at night. The owner is very friendly and was happy to show us around the house. We just felt that it was quite expensive for what it was.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your comments. It does work out relatively expensive to stay just one night in August because the changeover costs are the same whether one night or seven! Also, the supplement for one night stays in July/August is higher. This is always pointed out when an enquiry comes in as it was in your case. Having said that, it still works out a lot cheaper than the standard B&B with six people staying as there were during your visit.
Re the musty smell, there must have been a problem at the time because your stay was just after the previous guests - and these two comments are the only ones we have had across hundreds of bookings but we will certainly investigate whether it was down to the "heatwave" or an underlying problem. Kind regards

Good Location

  • 3 of 5
Property is well situated for exploring Ireland. It has a beautiful deck, nice bright dining area, big kitchen and family room. The house was also very clean. Our major issue with it was the overwhelming musty smell that is everywhere in the home. Is really bad when you open the cupboards in the kitchen and I literally had to wash all our clothes after we left to get the smell out. If you have any sort of environmental allergies this may not be an ideal spot for you.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your comments. I am sorry to hear that you experienced a musty smell during your stay, this is the very first time anyone has mentioned this! I can only assume it was due to the unexpected heat wave we enjoyed here in July when humidity was sky high. What I intend to do in the future is provide a de-humidifier if temperatures start to soar which will hopefully prevent any potential problem with this. I am pleased you enjoyed the riverside sun deck and house.

Nice little house, clean and well located

  • 4 of 5
Nice stay in this little bridge house. The owner is very accomodating and the house is renovated and clean. In spite of the fact that it is humid in the house, it is really confortable and spacious. The location is perfect for visiting the surrounding area. Very nice backyard, well maintained.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your nice comments. It certainly was an unusually humid week for our temperate Irish climate! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in Bridge House.

Historic Callan is one of Kilkenny's largest towns and was founded by William the Marshall in 1207. Callan has a good choice of traditional pubs, shops including supermarket and restaurants as well as good road and bus links to other main towns and cities. Medieval Kilkenny city is a mere 10-15 minute drive away. In 2005 Neil Jordan's film 'Breakfast in Pluto' starring Liam Neeson and Cillian Murphy was filmed here and in 2007 Callan celebrated its 800th year! There are many places of interest in the immediate vicinity including The Moat just off Bridge street, one of Ireland's best preserved Motte-and-baileys, The Workhouse in Prologue, Callan and Callan Augustinian Priory (which is just behind Bridge House), to name but a few. Callan is the birthplace of some famous people including Edmund Rice founder of Christian Brothers (whose childhood home is still in place), poet in exile John Locke (1847), James Hoban (who designed the White House), Irish painter Tony O'Malley.
