enchanted retreat for the soul

When my honey asked me where I wanted to spend a week for my fiftieth birthday, my mind travelled to foreign countries and exotic beaches yet somehow the thought of airplane travel and condo rentals just didn't feel right to my soul. What DID feel right was a remote cabin on a lake in Maine (mind you I live in downeast coastal Maine). So began my internet search which became quite extensive. After reviewing literally at least a hundred places, the Greenwood Cabin caught my attention. There's something to be said for intuition.
The cabin reminded me of a storybook, so cozy and lovingly appointed. Old fashioned down to the origional wood stove in the kitchen that has been restored to gas and electric! A pure joy to cook in for the foodies with a nostalgic leaning. All the restoration is top quality, not only in the kitchen but throughout the house, all with comfort, convenience, and beauty in balance. Dinners by the open fire in the fieldstone fireplace on the screened in porch, listening to the loons and the wind in the trees. No need for radio, T.V., the sounds of nature are as variable as theweather in Maine, all of which we appreciated, including downpours, thunderstorms, birds, etc. We barely left the cabin except for daytrips( of which there are many lovely options), so we really got to tune into the shifting light throughout the day on the decks around the house and little balcony off the bedroom upstairs, not to mention the heavenly hammock overlooking the lake. This place truly felt like a home away from home, with its personal touches from incredible reading material and old games, very sweet artwork depicting precious family times on the lake,to nice dry and abundant firewood for the woodstove and fireplace, and very comfy couches, beds and, yes, even a windowseat to watch the moon rise.
The lake itself is enchanting, as are the woods around the cabin and the lovely plantings in the yard. I was pleasantly surprised to learn of a young apricot tree near the hammock! The water gently laps the forest edge, with a nice sandy shallow bottom and a swing to watch the water. I would reccommend this place for a solitary retreat, romantic getaway(which I actually got to experience some of each), and also for families with young kids . I would imagine it would be an ideal winter getaway as well, perfectly cozy and enchanting. Can't wait to experience another season there...maybe the fall.......
