APARTMENT 1

Northwest Iceland Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Newly renovated 1 Bedroom apartment with fully equipped kitchen and bathroom

Gamla Pósthúsið (The Old Post House) holiday apartments are located in Sauðárkrókur in the Skagafjörður region of North West Iceland. It is conveniently located in the centre of town, only a few metres walking distance to the bakery, restaurants, museum and harbour. The self catering studio apartments are newly renovated, each with private bathroom and kitchen. The apartments are tastefully decorated and fully equipped with everything you would need for a relaxing holiday.

Each apartment has one double bedroom with queen size double bed, fully equipped kitchen catering for 4 persons. All linen and towels supplied, hairdryer, soap, toilet paper and free wireless internet. Cot and high chair available (no charge) and foldaway single bed can be booked for a small fee. All bookings include an initial one off complimentary supply of basic breakfast ingredients such as tea, coffee, sugar, milk, muesli, bread, butter etc.

Sauðárkrókur is about 290 km, a scenic 3 hr drive from Reykjavik. Situated in the northwest of Iceland Sauðárkrókur is the largest town in the Skagafjörður region. A short detour from the main ring road will bring you to this quiet fishing village with a population of nearly 3,000. The town of Sauðárkrókur is centrally located to many of the main attractions in the Skagafjörður area and nearby districts. So why not stay for a night or two and explore the town and surrounding areas before continuing back on to the main circle route.

Whilst here in town make sure you visit Sútarinn the only fish leather tannery in Europe. Guided tours of the factory are offered daily in the summer season and hides and designer/craft leather products are available for purchase.

Minjahús the local museum is open during the summer season from 1-7pm where you can view a range of historical exhibitions.

If you like to be more active then a horse-riding adventure maybe for you, the Skagafjörður area is renowned for its historic and contemporary association with the horse, it is not unusual to see horses roaming in large groups in this region. They say that there is an Icelandic horse to suit every level of rider from young to old, beginner to the more experienced. There are many horse-riding options for the area and you are sure to find one to suit your needs and abilities.

If you prefer water activities then a river rafting trip in Skagafjörður maybe just what you are looking for. Excursions are offered at different adventure levels from the more extreme to a gentler family experience.

If you are here during the months of September through to March it is highly likely that you will experience the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) as they are a common sighting in Iceland during this time. And if you visit in winter you can enjoy skiing trips on Tindastol just outside of town.

Only a 15min drive away from Sauðárkrókur is the historic turf farmhouse museum, Glaumbær. Visit the museum and inspect the fascinating turf construction interior and exterior. As there is very little wood found in Iceland, this type of building was popular in the 18th and 19th century and offered good insulation against the cold winter climate. Glaumbær farm was inhabited until 1947.

Just 31 kms from Sauðárkrókur is one of the most historic sites of Iceland. The Bishopric at Hólar was established in 1106 and continued for nearly seven centuries coming to an end around 1801.

38 km from Sauðárkrókur is the picturesque town of Hofsós where you can take a swim in possibly one of the most scenic placed pools in Iceland, visit the Icelandic Emigration Centre and survey the magnificent Basaltic cliffs.

A place not to miss in the summer are the hot springs at Grettislaug, only a 15 minute drive from Sauðárkrókur. Situated in the stunning landscape are two thermal rock pools, a great place to soak and relax in approximately 39°c naturally heated water.

Whilst at Grettislaug you can arrange to take a boat trip to Drangey. Drangey is an island that juts up nearly 200m out of the sea and is a haven for a variety of bird life including the Puffin. Drangey is recounted in the Grettis Saga and is where the two brothers Grettir and Illugi lived for three years and were eventually killed there.

Just beyond the Skagafjörður district you can explore the townships of Hvammstangi, Blönduós and Skagaströnd, or tour the very northern regions of Iceland and discover Siglufjörður and Ólafsfjörður most less than an hours drive away.

I am an Australian woman artist/printmaker who visited Iceland in the summer of 2009 and fell head over heals in love with the landscape. When I returned to Australia I could not get the place out of my mind and decided to have a major sea change before health and age became an obstacle. So 15 months after my initial visit I made the permanent move here and purchased an old 1952 post office.

Vicki OShea purchased this apartment in 2010

North Iceland is a magnificent area with varied stunning landscapes, I encourage tourists to explore beyond Reykjavik and the Golden Circle route. Saudarkrokur in the Skagafjordur region is just off the main ring road and offers a quieter holiday experience but still with a wonderful range of activities such as skiing, rafting, horse riding, hiking, all in the magnificent landscape, plus an array of scenic, significant and historic areas to visit most less than an hours drive.

The moment I stepped into this property I knew it was for me...it just had so much potential. It is the perfect building for me to live in, have an art studio and gallery as well as create a welcoming space for travellers visiting this magnificent country. Gamla Posthusid was originally built in 1952 with a side extension added in the 80s and was an active Post Office until the end of 2008. The top floor of the building was always the Post Masters apartment and is now where I reside. I purchased the property at the very end of 2010, December 31st in fact. 2011 was the year to settle in and plan the redevelopment of Gamla Posthusid and by August 2012 the first stage was completed and what was the public space of the Post Office was transformed into two self catering apartments. Next year 2014 I will undertake the renovation of the exterior of the building and establish a studio gallery within the side extension as an outlet for my art practice and to have the room offer workshops in bookbinding and printmaking.

Home Away from Home!

Vicki, thank you so much for your hospitality. Your apartments are a home away from home. I have only been here for two days but I can see why you fell in love with the place.

I so hope I will be able to return and spend more time exploring. My last stop is the bakery (again) before I leave.

I wish you all the best and good luck with the studio.

Vicki O'Shea - you blew our minds, this place rocks!!!

One of the best bakeries is so close!

You are our hero, you should be very proud, your restoration is exemplary, only a true artist could have such an aesthetic vision. I do not have Thorbjorgs gift of prophecy but I sense you are "home" surrounded by love happiness and success.

Oh my god, Vicki, you created a heavenly place. For us it was like a dream after a tough week in the rough climate of Iceland.

We would love to stay another day or 2 or 3 but the road is calling for us.

Please keep on doing this business for a very long time so we can come back one day.

Also love the books and the ipod was a very nice extra!!!

A pity for the environment but we stayed inside all the time.
