THE ONION HOUSE 'ARCHITECTURE SO FULL OF LIFE IT SEEMS TO BREATHE.'

Kailua Kona House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Home of the McCormick Spice family, the Onion House is a unique architectural treasure with stunning visual aesthetics. It has been featured on MTV, Travel Channel, Learning Channel, Fine Living Channel, HGTV, Global Architecture Magazine, and Architectural Digest.

Swim and sunbathe in privacy, enjoying the 70' pool, gardens, and lily ponds. The terrace faces sunsets and Kailua Bay, providing the ideal setting for candlelight dinners. The translucent roof and walls of stained glass allow filtered sunlight throughout. The detached master suite features a private walled garden. A covered outdoor walkway leading to the master bedroom structure is flanked by lily ponds and the turquoise pool overlooking the sea.

With grounds of nearly an acre, five minutes from town or beach, this is the perfect base camp for exploring the Big Island.

Guestbook:: Beth, Beth, how can we ever say thank you enough for the beautiful experience at the Onion House? Joe and I and my mother had the most relaxing and enjoyable time. I cannot think of anything that was missing. We did manage to get to a beach so Mom could put her feet in the ocean and one day we drove to Waimea so she could see the lava flows, We also managed to get to a coffee plantation. Other than that, the privacy and peacefulness at the house was the high point of the trip. The geckos, birds, flowers, fruits and plants along with the sound of water in the pool made for a paradise. We slept great, got up at dawn and just watched the place come alive. I cannot imagine ever going to a hotel again. Thank you again for being a part of this gift for my mom. Dawn

Hi Beth, Peter and I had a great time at the Onion House. It did so much for us as a couple and as hard working people. We have come back to Sonoma with new energy and vision as to how to enjoy life fully. We did alot of exploring this time on the big Island. We went out past Havi to the trail head that goes forever. We hiked down two mountains through two rivers and found bamboo forests and Jurassic Palms. We also went horse back riding near Waimea and had so much fun with the people and horses, it reminded me of being a child with my friends. We found a beautiful beach just north of the airport where we hiked along the lava flow and found fresh water spring fed pools in the lava to swim in after the ocean. We felt like Adam and Eve. The house was such a magical place to end our day and watch the sun go down. We loved swimming au natural in the pool and playing kids games. Thank you and your family and your Aunt's vision for creating a haven on earth.

Namaste, Michele & Peter

Dear Beth,

26 days in Hawaii and the Onion House was definitely one of the highlights of

our trip!

Thank you for letting us experience the Onion House for those two days. My

family never stopped grinning from ear to ear the entire time they were

staying there.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your Aunt and the history of the house. I

have been sharing the story and pictures of the house with my friends and

neighbors. Your Aunt is a character I won't soon forget.

The overwhelming feeling I had while staying there was one of thankfulness

that you restored the house and then let others experience it's unique charm.

Thank you, Beth, for everything.

About Beth McCormick

Beth McCormick is a largely self-taught artist who has spent her life exploring the expressions of spirit in a variety of media. As a child she fell in love with unusual architecture, and later had the opportunity to purchase and renovate the Onion House, part of her family’s legacy, which has become a widely acclaimed example of Organic Architecture. Beth McCormick’s artwork has been collected internationally, and ranges from the natural splendor of feathered masks and shields, to landscapes and figures rendered in pastels and oils. The artwork and home have been chronicled in many television and print features, and her artwork has been shown in over 90 galleries nationwide and abroad. Her work is in many private collections, including the Michael Rosenberg Collection in London, and the Chris Hemmeter Collection in Hawaii. She also works to establish sustainability of the natural world through the Permaculture Foundation of Hawaii, of which she is a founding member.

Beth McCormick purchased this house in 1984

Why Beth McCormick chose Kailua Kona

There's no place on earth like this.

What makes this house unique

A unique part of Hawaiian history, the Onion House is a pivotal piece of my family's history, built by my favorite aunt, 'Auntie Dofeen.' I have the opportunity to share the home with guests from around the world, who bring friends and family to celebrate special moments in their lives.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I wish I could live there

This place was amazing. Very peaceful, and very beautiful. If you have the chance, stay at the Onion House. My boyfriends father took seven of us around new years, there was plenty of room. I can't think of one thing that turned me off about this house. There are almost no real walls, its all beautiful stained glass and secure screens that seperate indoor from outdoor. Inside of course there are walls, it's private. My favorite thing, making breakfast in the morning and eating outside on the patio next to the pool. Having coffee and playing with the geckos, (they love scrambled eggs!). If you're going take me with you! To the owner: Thanking you for sharing such a great and special place! I'll remember it forever!

A Work of Art

  • 4 of 5
We stayed 4 nights at the Onion House and enjoyed our time there. It was a very unique experience. We felt like we were camping in luxury. It rained every night while we were there and listening to the rain made for very nice sleeping. For a house that is 50 years old it does show aging that is not reflected on the website. We enjoyed our time there.

Best Vacation Home Ever!!!!

  • 5 of 5
The Onion House is the best vacation home ever!! I stayed with 5 other women and it was perfect for all of us. We felt like we were in paradise. It met all of our needs and coming home at night after a long day at the beach and having our own private pool was wonderful. Loved the architecture! Just can't say enough wonderful things about the Onion House. I will return!!!!

Wonderful Experience

  • 5 of 5
The Onion House was a perfect place to celebrate four "special" birthdays with five of my girlfriends. I never tired of looking at the view towards the ocean through the beautiful stained glass windows. I felt I belonged there and was sorry when my stay came to an end. Thank you Beth for sharing your beautiful house with us.

The magic of the Onion House!

  • 5 of 5
We made the Onion House our base from which to introduce my sister and brother-in-law to the the Big Island. Its energy refreshed and energized us all. Never before have we enjoyed such magic. We snorkeled with dolphins and manta rays, whales serenaded us while scuba-diving and entertained us while we enjoyed beautiful beaches, sunset and star-gazing - truly spectacular from the deck and from the summit of Mauna Kea (green flashes two days in a row). We will return to our Big Island as Friends of the Onion House.

Exceeded expectations

  • 5 of 5
As a lover of architecture and landscaping the onion house was a real treat for me. It was well maintained, clean and Beth and Jeanie were very willing to help. Beth was very careful to warn people about the multiple stairs and open design of the house. An occasional bug was seen but that was expected. We had a great stay and showing pictures of the house is one of the first topics I go into when friends ask about our trip,

We went to Oahu and Kona and much preferred Kona. Whale watching, active volcanos, star gazing at Mona Kea, Scuba etc made for a busy trip. Lounging at he onion house was also great.

A mini-continent offering a taste of almost every climate on the planet, the Big Island of Hawaii is known for fountaining volcanoes, emerald cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and year-round sunny, warm beaches. Some of the best telescopes in the world are located on the snowy peak of Mauna Loa, while the reefs offer snorkeling, diving, whale-watching, and surfing in abundance. One of the most famous places in the world for swimming with wild dolphins, Kealakekua Bay and the City of Refuge offer a delightful introduction to the underwater realm. (Be respectful; let dolphins approach you if they want to interact.) The night dive with manta rays is one of the world's top-rated dives.
