A hidden treasure of a home, as fresh as a dawn chorus
Off the scale
Just a handful of minutes from the garden squares of Notting Hill you’ll find a hidden treasure of a home. As fresh as a dawn chorus, as liltingly magical as any aria, this is a home of considerable note. Be carried away upon waves of sunshine as you drift from room to room – where velvet, flowers and pure white walls come together in a veritable symphony of loveliness. Then, browse Portobello Market, dine out in Notting Hill, or just slip outside into the Zen garden, and savour the pure refrain of running water, as soothing as any lullaby.
Your hostess is a professional harpist and singer. She writes and records scores for TV and film – and it must be said that her home ranks as one of her finest compositions. A free spirit, she can often be found trying new restaurants, dallying in galleries, or entertaining guests late into the night.
You’ll hardly be able to believe that such calm can exist in the big city. The sitting room is pale and soft, with snowy walls and a gorgeously comfortable sofa. The kitchen diner is open-plan, its limestone work surfaces illuminated from the skylight above. The glass dining table seats eight, and you’ll notice your hostess’ love of clever lighting in the large black pendant lamp. And when you’ve dined, head out into the decked Zen garden, where you can finish your drink in the company of a pair of koi carp.
The master bedroom has views down into the garden, or, if you’d rather, you can watch the television from the kingsized bed. Next door there’s a bathroom with white tiles and a full-sized tub. The study holds a large desk and a collection of books alongside the double sofabed, and there’s an ensuite shower room tiled in harmonious violet and sage.
You’re surrounded by galleries and bars, and when it comes to eating out, your hostess particularly recommends the foodie hotspot that is Nottingdale. Wander through streets made familiar by Richard Curtis’ hit movie before picking up some Hummingbird cupcakes to feast upon in Holland Park. And if you’ve an appointment at Wigmore Hall, the tube journey from Holland Park to Oxford Circus takes around fifteen minutes.
