Home is where the art is
This enviably secluded three bedroom mews house in classy Kensington has a seriously creative atmosphere. You'll need to catch your breath when you enter the vast yet deceptively cosy open plan downstairs area, where the expansive sitting room and sleek, modern kitchen will have you wondering whether first to host a dinner party or collapse in a giddy heap on the huge sofas. Your guests will admire the beautiful paintings, while if you fancy heading out, Kensington offers every urban, and urbane, pleasure on your doorstep.
Your hosts are both arty types with a passion for entertaining. Your hostess is an accessories designer while her husband works at an international design and branding agency. They met and fell in love in London but moved to the countryside with their two children, as well as spending a brief spell abroad. But now they're back in the capital and loving it, particularly enjoying the paradox of being in such quiet seclusion, and close to the vibrant world of Kensington.
A mews bouche
Mews houses were originally built as servants' quarters for London's grander families, but they are now some of the most desirable properties in town. It’s easy to see why. This home's palatial ground floor is the perfect spot to entertain guests. Its modern, open plan kitchen of white cupboards, granite surfaces and stainless steel appliances gives cooks the chance to whip up a feast while still joining in with the conversation, while their friends can kick back on the comfy sofas and enjoy the arty trinkets and music selection. The disco ball has seen many an after-dinner party, and no doubt will do so again.
Upstairs the master bedroom is grand and light, with a very swanky folding clothes screen and generous wardrobe. There's an acoustic guitar for anyone wishing to unleash their inner axeman, while the large ensuite bathroom gives plenty of scope for pre-prandial preening. There are two further single bedrooms and a second bathroom, meaning there's no shortage of room for children or post-dinner stragglers.
From mews to museum
Unsurprisingly, considering your hosts’ enthusiasms, you're within a brush stroke of some of London's best museums and galleries, with the V&A, Natural History Museum, and Serpentine galleries all within strolling distance. Have a romantic afternoon stroll around Hyde Park, peruse the shops of High Street Kensington, or ensconce yourself in one of the many local pubs. There's spectacular modern cuisine at Launceston Place, or something simpler at nearby Café Phillies.
