Brooklyn Apartment Rental Photos and Description
Travel from bazaar to beach in this 3 bed brownstone in Fort Greene, Brooklyn
All aboard? Renew your passport, bookmark your Baedeker and prepare to follow the trade winds as you enter this three floor brownstone in trendy Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Filled with carpets from India, ottomans from Morocco and mementos of the rainforest, the savannah and the seashore, this global gallery is an adventure in itself. After stowing your steamer trunks, wander the leafy streets of one of Brooklyn’s most desirable neighbourhoods (by camel or by foot.) The restaurants of Fort Greene offer breakfast in France, lunch in Thailand or dinner in South Africa. Between meals, catch a matinee of a film from Iran or an opera from Italy in the beaux-arts splendour of the Brooklyn Academy of Music - or simply savour a picnic in Fort Greene Park.
Your host has a well-stamped passport and lives here with his family. Between journeys abroad, he nurtures his own craft: designing and building furniture.
Atlas and compass
A Bedouin tent might suffice for some nomads, but the comforts of Carlton Avenue will last you one thousand and one nights. Whisper open sesame on the front stoop and be transported to the desert oasis of the living room, with its soft leather chairs, pendant lanterns and colourful throw rugs. Mementos from journeys past adorn the room: ornamental camels from Morocco, a vase from China, and a statue of Don Quixote from Spain are just a few of the destinations recalled here. Perfect a tagine in the spacious kitchen and serve it at the antique wood dining table, or update your travel diary in a study filled with Old World art, textiles, and even a taxidermy peacock.
On a clear night, seek out the pole star in the comfort of the ivy-filled back garden. Your host designed and built the beautiful wooden furniture there himself. Downstairs, the North African theme continues in the woven pillows and soft lighting of the master bedroom. In the en suite master bath, seashells transport you from desert to beach. The boy’s bedroom and the bottommost level sleeping area will let you choose your own adventure: Jurassic jungle or a trophy hunt on the Serengeti.
While Manhattan is just a short train ride away, leafy Fort Greene is a world unto itself. Enjoy a bratwurst at the Der Schwarze Kölner beer garden, a braai at South African restaurant Madiba or shop for a Spanish Manchego at the specialty market The Greene Grape. If you prefer to haggle like the hipsters, spend a Saturday wandering the marketplace stalls of the Brooklyn Flea, where you can shop for an antique rucksack or snack on everything from Honduran pupusas to homemade pickles.
