For in this large family home, the pleasure’s all in the detail. Just a few steps from Clapham Common, and with a handy private garden, you’ll find Forthbridge Road to be large, comfortable and airy. Yet that’s just the beginning of its charms. If you loathe the impersonal, you and your loved ones will take huge pleasure from the books, toys, games and antiques that fill this lovely house. Every room is cheerful with original artwork, photos and ornaments, Indeed, a stay here is to feel truly at home.
Your hostess hails from the States and works as a property investor, executive coach and art consultant, while your English host spent twenty years in the army and holds intriguing connections with the royal family. Look out for the military memorabilia in the bedroom at the top of the house, if you’re good, we might even let you try on that hat…
Forthbridge Road’s sitting room is dominated by a beautiful wooden fireplace and some gorgeously squishy sofas. Head through the double doors to find the generous dining table, with seats for up to ten hungry guests, and on into the fully equipped kitchen and sunny conservatory. Throw open the doors to the garden, or go upstairs and explore the bedrooms. There’s no battling over bathrooms, you’ve three; the first floor family bathroom’s packed with bath toys, while more mature guests will appreciate the bundle of White Company toiletries.
There are two single kid’s rooms on the first floor, and next door, the enormous master bedroom. With its superking wooden bed, polished antique furniture and generously sized en suite, mums and dads might want to barricade the doors. Up on the second floor there’s a king sized bed nestling beneath a large skylight with its own smart shower room. And finally, soldier on up to the top of the house to find a trundle bed in the attic.
Buzzy Clapham combines hip bars and restaurants with an array of scrummy cafes and bakeries. Shopaholics will adore the seemingly never-ending line up of boutiques, while if you want to stretch your legs, you’ve more than enough space on the common. If you want to get into town, Clapham Common tube and Clapham Junction station are just five minutes away by bus, which, conveniently, stops at the end of the road, meaning you can be in the West End in around half an hour.
