If you're looking for quintessential Englishness, you should give Dorset Square the time of day. Built almost 200 years ago on the site of a cricket club, this perfectly-proportioned Georgian garden sits snugly between the idyll of Regent's Park and the bustle of Baker St, and is also where author Dodie Smith sat and dreamt up despicable fashionista Cruella De Ville for her novel 101 Dalmatians. On the fourth floor of a red-brick Edwardian mansion block, this home has cool colours, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. If you're looking for calm, you've come to the right place.

The new black

Your host is a Scottish-born designer who has spent the past 13 years living in Hong Kong with his partner, who also works in fashion. They have brought a little bit of Asia back with them to the centre of London. Eastern influences abound throughout the flat, including oriental motifs on the rugs that they designed themselves. The hosts love the vibrancy of its high street, and the peace of the green spaces, something that their friends and family infallibly comment on when they visit.

A whiter shade of pale

Beyond the large entrance hall with floorboards painted pale, stroll into the dining room and adjoining sitting room. A brighter white you will not find, in contrast to the jet black of the original Edwardian fireplaces, charcoal linen blinds, matching square sofa and Art Deco-style armchairs. A door from the cream and brushed-steel kitchen leads onto a cast-iron outside staircase. Down the hall the master suite has a vast bed and a small, original fireplace. The second bedroom has a slightly smaller bed and an enormous Edwardian fireplace.

Cricket Whites

Dorset Square is built on the original site of the cricket pitch that became the world-famous Marylebone Cricket Club, now situated at Lords in neighbouring St John's Wood. If the green of the square isn’t enough, there is always Regent's Park, a five minute stroll away. The Lisson Gallery, with its roster of contemporary art is nearby, as is Alfie's Antique Market, on Church Street. And if it's restaurants and shops that interest you, walk over to Marylebone High Street. Oxford Circus is just five minutes away by Tube.
