Parks and recreation
Dull would he or she be whose heart wasn’t warmed by the sight of green space. City life has much to recommend it, but views out onto brick walls, however striking they are, do little to soothe the soul. But at Dorlcote Road, things are rather different. With views out across Wandsworth Common, and a park just a handful of steps from your front door, this is a house that brings the outdoors right within reach. The rear of this home has been extended so that light pours into the open plan living space through full-length glass. On warm summer evenings, just open the doors to find a whole extra room, its ceiling speckled with stars.
See the world
Your hosts are true citizens of the world. They met in Cambridge, married in Hong Kong, and have since lived in Belgium, Holland, the USA and West Africa. Their home is always filled with music, sometimes from the stereo, but more often from the sitting room’s baby grand piano.
You’ll find evidence of your hosts’ travels all around Dorlcote Road. This is a home that’s modern and cosmopolitan, with a strong sense of its Victorian heritage. You’ll see it in the original fireplace and cornicing of the lounge, in the sitting room’s antique furniture, and you’ll feel it in the lively fabrics and the shelves upon shelves of books.
There are three communal living spaces, a grand lounge, an intimate TV room, and the sitting room, which leads into the sunny open-plan kitchen diner, and on into the garden. The master bedroom has a king-sized bed, and wonderful views out over the nearby common. The sense of space continues on into the marble ensuite with his and hers sinks. There’s a single bedroom with a cot along the corridor, and a further shower room. Up one floor you’ll find a charming twin room, an atmospheric double, and a further bathroom. Here, you can wash while drawing inspiration from a hand-painted underwater mural.
Sporty types will be racing around Wandsworth Common’s exercise track, or maybe chasing balls across the tennis courts. More sedate sorts will enjoy a picnic beneath the trees. For victuals, explore the cafes, bakeries and delis of Battersea. You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to bars and restaurants, or, if you want to get into Central London, trains from nearby Wandsworth Common station arrive at Victoria in just ten minutes.
