A temple or a home? You’ll find the distinction deliquescing in this broodingly beautiful home. Recently refurbished as an urban cottage in the heart of a Grade II Victorian conservation neighbourhood, Cornwall Road 2 is adorned with Buddhist imagery, ethnographic artefacts from the Orient and internationally acclaimed art. But don’t bow in reverence, this home maintains a country casualness – when you’re done at the French Farmhouse table, with the triple shower wet room and the plasma flat screen TVs, head out to the Old Vic or National Theatre, at either end of the street.

Shogun wedding

Your host trades antiques, while his partner is in fashion. Their minds, trained to appreciate the old and the new, have collaborated in the juxtaposition of venerated antiques and the clean lines of contemporary furnishings. They designed this retreat to reflect their passions, calling New York home, but longing to spend their time in London.

Teahouse

The street outside may be energetic, but the atmosphere inside Cornwall Road 2 is blissfully still. Cross the threshold into a slate floored sanctuary of books and reading, lit by a lamp fashioned after a lotus flower. A sliding door conceals a double bedroom, with a king-sized bed and nineteenth century Chinese bedside tables. Next door there’s a bathroom with a Jacuzzi and countertops of black pearl granite.

Up past the placid gaze of the statue at the top of the stairs, the open plan kitchen has views of the London Eye, and the peaceful church of St Patrick across the road, and of course all the top of the line appliances. The adjacent sitting area is filled with Eastern curios, including a twisting table once used for tea ceremonies, sixteenth century pottery, and two Japanese cabinets. Contemplate their loveliness from the white leather sofa, or open the doors out onto the slate garden terrace and sample the home-grown apples, grapes and cherries. Light the fire as the sun sets in the west.

The master bedroom is on the top floor, with a king-sized bed, and a wall adorned with a handmade futon cover, while the master ensuite is simply stunning. Split into two areas either side of a black pearl wetroom, there are multiple sinks, and three LED-lit showers.

Go for a drink at your local pub, the White Hart, or sample the South Bank’s café culture, just five minutes away. You’ve world-class entertainment from the BFI, the National Theatre, the Hayward Gallery and the IMAX cinema, not to mention the London Eye, Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe. A walk over Waterloo Bridge brings you to the bright lights of Covent Garden, or jump on the tube. The journey from Waterloo to Leicester Square takes five minutes.
