Overview

Islington House Rental Photos and Description

Living history

The whispering mist, the gleam of rain upon stone cobbles – Shoreditch is the London of Austen and Dickens, of the romantic poets and Jack the Ripper. And, in a narrow street just off bustling Brick Lane, sits an enchanting home. Panelled walls display mysterious portraits, curious objects sit quietly in shafts of sunlight, and polished wood glows gently with the caresses of time. Princelet Street was recently renovated – peer beyond the fretwork doors and ornate fireplaces to discover a modern kitchen, and bathrooms just oozing glamour. But despite the touches of 2012, this home’s soul belongs to 1725 - never was past more present.

Keepers of the peace

Your host is one of London’s leading architects, while your hostess is a teacher. They purchased their home from a leather coat manufacturer, and spent fourteen years bringing it to its present glory.

Lost and found

Your hosts have taken every care to preserve as many of Princelet Street’s original features as possible. Behind the grand façade awaits a sitting room panelled in dove grey, the carefully sanded floorboards and elegant furniture presided over by a bust of Socrates – leave nothing unexamined. There’s playfulness on every scale, from the gigantic urn to the shuffling armadillo, while those hungering for contemporary comfort will be pleased to discover the drawing room’s flat screen TV.

There’s space for four to dine amidst the almost tropical foliage of the split level garden, and the eat-in kitchen manages to hold an array of new appliances while retaining the bewitching atmosphere that pervades this home. All three bedrooms are doubles, and there’s a dusky hue to the spacious master suite, which holds a four-poster bed, and, in a nod to this home’s heritage, a freestanding aluminium bathtub.

Back to the future

Shoreditch, and its neighbour Spitalfields, have much to please both traditionalists and hipsters - whether you yearn for cosy taverns or funky retro bars, you won’t be thirsty for long. Eat out on Brick Lane, wend your way through the backstreets to Whitechapel or grab the latest trends straight from their designers at Spitalfields Market. The City’s palaces of glass and steel are within walking distance, and the tube from Aldgate to Covent Garden takes twenty minutes.

About Owner / Property Manager

onefinestay gives you the chance to stay in someone's place while they're out of town. You get to live their life for a few days and nights.

Booking a stay is as easy as booking a hotel room. And there's service to match.

Nobody wants to be a tourist, so our homes come with recommendations from the people who live in them. For everything else, we're here 24/7.

Why Owner / Property Manager chose Islington

Shoreditch has been declared ‘over’ more times than Madonna. And shown similar bounce-backability. Just when you think its become too bridge-and-tunnel to be credible, another great new bar (try Well & Bucket and the 5cc Cocktail Club downstairs), restaurant (try Casa Negra or The Clove Club ), or pop-up store (try ‘Beach in the East’) pops up and convinces you again that Shoreditch is a throbbing loci of cool.

Set just north of the City, the area was pretty much a desolate no-man’s land just 20 years ago (though it has always been a favoured quarter of artists looking for cheap studio space in empty warehouses). Then came SoHo-ification and waves of bars and clubs have come and gone since (as has the White Cube gallery on Hoxton Square, leaving the area’s defining landmark temporarily vacant).

Redchurch Street is the new retail hot spot with rumours that the luxury goods groups are set to move in en masse and join the likes of APC and Aesop, while Shoreditch House(see below) still provides a suitable HQ and hang-out for the area’s tattoo-and-laptop entrepreneurs.

Indeed, behind the buzzy bars and snappy stores, Shoreditch has become the preferred home of tech and new media companies in London with the area around Old Street Station dubbed ‘Silicon Roundabout’.

What makes this house unique

Booking a stay is as easy as booking a hotel room, with online payment and confirmation. You get the same attention to detail and personal service too.

Every home is properly cleaned before and after you stay, beds made (we can even do hospital corners) and bathrooms kitted out with luxury toiletries. There’s a maid service if you want it, as well as other hotel-style amenities.

Once we’ve helped you settle in, we’re just a call away, 24/7. If it’s something we can’t solve over the phone, we’ll pop over to lend a hand.

And because nobody wants to be a tourist, our homes come with personal and unique recommendations from the people who live in them – places to eat, things to do and adventures to go on.
