Another very happy visit to Crete and the village of Armeni. We had just 6 days free over the Jubilee weekend and half term holiday and decided to escape London and the bad weather and head back to Crete to find out whether we could repeat the fantastic experience we had in the neighbouring Villa Galania four years ago. I am very glad to say that we were not disappointed. We love the sleepy village and the fantastic views across the valley to the mountains and the hill top ruins of Aptera. Armeni is very pretty - a big church that chimes out the hours, the freshwater springs and stream, the trees around the central square. The new bakery, the wonderful delicatessen, small supermarket and taverna mean that you don't actually have to travel anywhere to eat very well indeed and in fact we found the provisions in Armeni, just a 10 minute walk from the villa, better than in the larger local town of Kalives although there is more choice of eating out and the possibility of buying a newspaper and souvenirs there if you want to. We didn't feel the need to leave the very beautiful villa more than once or twice - we were there to recuperate and for one of our daughter's to revise without distractions of any kind, especially the internet! We quickly slipped into reading, swimming, relaxing - sleeping so well with the Cretan breeze coming through the windows and the sounds of the goat bells and the occasional call of the peacock from the aviary. The moon was full while we were there and so we had twice the landscape for our money - one sunlit and green during the day and the other silver and sparkling at night. The villa is very well equipped - we had everything we needed and more - lots of space and different places to sit and lounge, each with its own view. We really appreciated the details such as the fly screens at every window and the way in which the villa has been placed so that you can neither disturb or be disturbed by the villa next door. The jacuzzi was a bonus - very cool on the hottest days and yet another way of relaxing! We really like the coastal drive out of Kalives and towards Georgioupolis and managed to find the idyllic little cove that we visited last holiday where you can swim in a warm, crystal clear sea and watch the tropical looking fish swimming below. We have found a little bit of paradise that we love, As you can tell, we are completely smitten! John, Jo, Lily and
