We Miss It Already!

  • 5 of 5
Lined with olive trees and surrounded by breathtaking vistas of San Gimignano and neighboring vineyards, Villa la Porticciolo provided the perfect anchor for our Tuscan adventure. Within the rustic walls of this charming home are all the modern conveniences one could wish for -- including a hair dryer. The four large bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms granted our group of four friends privacy, while the comfortable living room, warmed by the fireplace, brought us together every evening for endless conversation.

A key feature for us was the villa’s proximity to town – a 15 minute hike up the hill on a tranquil country road, which we took most nights to sample some of the town’s best restaurants -- including a couple of great recommendations by Alessandro, the villa’s owner. We also took advantage of San Gimignano’s market day to buy pasta and local vegetables for the delectable home-cooked dinner we prepared in the villa’s well-equipped kitchen, which we washed down with the wine Alessandro gave us upon our arrival.

Working with Alessandro was a pleasure: he’s honest and kind, speaks excellent English, and responds promptly to inquiries.

This place is a gem, as well as a great value. We look forward to returning soon.

The Perfect Location in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5
If you are looking for the perfect Villa in Tuscany, look no further. The Villa La Porticciola exceeded our expectations. Four couples shared the villa for fourteen wonderful days, beginning in late September. The owner is a gracious and accommodating host. The entire process from booking to checking-in/out was easy and professionally done.

The main floor includes two very large sitting areas, a wonderful dining area with room to seat all eight of us comfortably around the table and a very efficient and usable kitchen. The kitchen includes all you might need for preparing breakfasts and light meals (we chose not to prepare any dinners there)....there are two good sized refrigerators so you don’t have to worry about keeping food or drinks cool. There is a full bathroom and washing machine also on the main floor.

All four bedrooms are located on the top floor (accessible from the outside without hauling luggage up and down many steps). The bedrooms were all spacious, well appointed and with comfortable beds. Each room had its own en-suite bathroom.

All the outside areas are well maintained and provide views of San Gimignano that are picture-perfect. The patios are a great place to have a morning cup of coffee and watch the sun come up over the Tuscan hills or to finish the day with a glass of wine under the stars.

The walk into San Gimignano takes between 15-20 minutes. It is mostly uphill so you do get a bit of a work-out, but it is well worth it once you reach the town. It takes about five minutes to drive and park at one of the car parks if you are going in for dinner, touring or shopping. We wouldn’t recommend walking in after dark without a good flash-light. It is quite dark and you will often encounter cars.

The location provides a great central location for day-trips within Tuscany. Besides touring in San Gimignano, we did day- trips to Siena, Radda in Chianti, Volterra, Monteriggioni, Cortona, the Abbey of San Galgano, Assisi and Pisa (by train from Poggibonsi). Several of us also took the train from Empoli to Cinque Terre for two days and one-night. Again, easy to do. The owner is eager to give you recommendations for visiting wineries in the local area. Several in our group did that.

By far, the highlight for the Villa was the Tuscan dinner prepared and served by a local cook. If you have ever wanted to experience what it is like live in the hills of Tuscany, this Villa provides the perfect opportunity!

  • 5 of 5
This place is perfect : wonderful views, amazing spaces inside the Villa, perfectly private, a leisurely 15 minute stroll to the centre of town & the grounds are abound with flowers, animals & the stunning tuscan sunshine.
There was 7 of us on this holiday myself and my husband traveled with my best friend, her husband & their 3 children - 13, 7 & 5yrs.. It was so comfortable & spacious with great lounging spaces..
We look forward to returning someday in the future to spend another week at Villa la Porticciola...
The online booking process with Alessandro was professional and made the experience easy, convenient & 100% trustworthy..
If you get the opportunity to explore San Gimingnano, this is the place to do it from.

Beautiful and historic villa which met all our expectations

  • 5 of 5
Our seven night stay at Villa La Porticciola was a wonderful experience in all respects. Our host Alessandro was very gracious and attentive to all of our needs and even greeted us with some excellent local wine for which he provides grapes from his vineyard. The home is very well maintained and comfortable with four spacious bedrooms and adjoining en suite modern tiled bathrooms. Several well situated terraces provide magnificent views in all directions and are perfect for al fresco dining (not to mention the private swimming pool). Breakfast on the terrace adjoining the kitchen, with magnificent views of the skyline of San Gimignano was one of our favorite times. The villas location is ideal for "day-trip" touring of Tuscany. Besides the beautiful town of San Gimignano our favorites were the walled city of Volterra, only 30 minutes distant, Siena (don't miss the cathedral), Florence, and the town of Greve-in-Chianti which was hosting its 43rd annual Chianti Classico festival. We could not have been happier with our experience at Villa La Porticciola and would not only return, but will recommend it to our friends and family. The villa is ideal for a large group of family or friends, and four couples would be easily accommodated in the home.

Excellent choice for Tuscany!

  • 5 of 5
The pictures of this villa are fantastic which makes you wonder if the reality can match the photos. But it does! The rooms are spacious, beautiful and clean. The views are amazing. The outside space is unbelievable...several spots to sit, eat, relax all with amazing views plus a very nice pool area. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, pots, pans etc. Five bathrooms and a washer! Two sitting areas and free wifi. Wifi is occasionally spotty as you would expect in the countryside but really was not a big deal. We were able to facetime or skype with no problems.

Additionally, although we were at first skeptical that it was an easy walk to San Gimignano it really was. Several times I dropped the over 70 crowd at the gate to the city returned to park at the villa and walk to the town. No problem.

The owner is really easy to work with and everything is handled very professionally. You will not get any unfortunate surprises when you are dealing with this property owner. He is very helpful and even met us at 10:30 pm because we were late arriving from Rome because of plane delay issues.

San Gimignano rises on a hill (334m high) dominating the Elsa Valley with its towers. Once the seat of a small Etruscan village of the Hellenistic period (200-300 BC) it began its life as a town in the 10th century taking its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena, St. Gimignano, who is said to have saved the village from the barbarian hordes. The town increased in wealth and developed greatly during the Middle Ages thanks to the 'Via Francigena' the trading and pilgrim's route that crossed it. Such prosperity lead to the flourishing of works of art to adorn the churches and monasteries. In 1199 it became a free municipality and fought against the Bishops of Volterra and the surrounding municipalities. Due to internal power struggles it eventually divided into two factions one headed by the Ardinghelli family (Guelphs) and the other by the Salvucci family (Ghibellines). On the 8th May 1300 Dante Alighieri came to San Gimignano as the Ambassador of the Guelph League in Tuscany. In 1348 San Gimignano's population was drastically reduced by the Black Death Plague throwing the city into a serious crisis which eventually led to its submission to Florence in 1353. In the following centuries San Gimignano overcame its decline and isolation when its beauty and cultural importance together with its agricultural heritage were rediscovered. The construction of the towers dates back to the 11th and 13th centuries. The architecture of the city was influenced by Pisa, Siena and Florence. There are 14th century paintings of the Sienese School to be seen and 15th century paintings of the Florentine School.
