About David Rudd
We are in fact 3 families who co-own 2 houses adjacent to each other. One is La Belle Maison which we rent out commercially through this website and the other is Les Hiboux bought in 1989 which is a larger property but less well equipped and which we use ourselves or let to family and close friends.
David Rudd purchased this farmhouse in 1995
Why David Rudd chose Beaulieu sur Dordogne
This was a building which if we had not bought it would by now just be a heap of rubble. It was however an integral part of the village and it presented us with a challenge and a project that was irresistible. Today it is equipped for holiday living to a good standard with effectively a bathroom per bedroom.
We chose the area because it was within a day's drive of the Channel ports and was sufficiently far south to hopefully be in with a better than even chance of some sun and warmth. It was located sufficiently close to main tourist traps to allow for interesting sight-seeing but away from the madding crowds of the 'popular' end of the Dordogne valley (Souillac westward). Her we were not inundated with non French speaking English and it felt to us like the real France and a place where we could relax in peace.
We know that we lack a swimming pool but some of us were concerned that it would be difficult to keep maintained to a high enough standard and some of our guests have specifically wished to avoid the risk of a pool for their young children. With a swimming lake only 10 minutes drive away we have not felt it to be too great a drawback and going to the lake lets us mix with other families, gives us a bar and restaurant and a truly tranquil haven to return to.
What makes this farmhouse unique
We have endeavoured to preserve and enhance the original features of this old farmhouse and have we believe succeeded. There is a wealth of exposed beams and wood flooring,
The wonderful site of Rocamadour is only a 45 minute drive away along with some of the most beautiful villages of the Dordogne valley.
A very pleasant light red and rose wine is produced locally (Cotes de Glanes)
There are many local food markets where truly fresh, flavoursome and local fruit and vegetables, cheese meat and free range eggs are in plentiful supply.
