‘Seaview’ is a large and luxurious Devon holiday house, less than five minutes walk from two beautiful sandy beaches, recommended for their excellent water quality in the 2014 Good Beach Guide, and Burgh Island, a sea-tractor ride away. In a UK Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the South facing house and garden feature stunning panoramic views of Bigbury Bay, the Avon Estuary and Bigbury / Bantham beaches which are famous for surfing and every kind of watersport, with equipment available for hire on the beach. The house is only a few minutes walk away from restaurants, pub, local store and Burgh Island.

The main house and annexe have been lovingly rebuilt internally, featuring 5/6 bedrooms, five marbled bathrooms and a large open plan ground floor with ultra modern kitchen, dining area and lounge with panoramic sea views. I can totally recommend Seaview House for absolute comfort and amazing ocean views. We stayed at this beautiful house in Bigbury on Sea with some friends as a 50th birthday treat. We couldn't have asked for more. The owners were helpful and friendly from start of booking to end of stay.......Allan even came to pick us up in Modbury when my car broke down. On arrival both Maggie and Allan took time to show us around the house and answered the many questions we had to ask about the house and the design/decode (which they had done themselves with exquisite taste). The bedrooms are warm and so comfortable, the kitchen and bathrooms have everything you need and more. My daughter slept in the self contained annex and now wants Maggie and Allan to adopt her so she can live there. I warn you both that she is more trouble than she looks! Thank you both so much for a perfect weekend. After years of weekend breaks in various cold and crooked cottages, we don't want to go anywhere else now! See you in Feb 2015 if not before!

This house deserves 6 stars! Amazing house, lovely gardens, fabulous views. Best equipped house we have ever had. Extended family loved it and did not want to leave. Allan & Maggie have made a bit of paradise for us to share. Bigbury on sea is ideal for children a with lovely beaches, not much to do in the village, but the house more than compensates, grab a glass of wine and just enjoy the beautiful views from the garden and house.

An outstanding property in every way

This property is every bit as good as the photographs show. The L shaped kitchen dining living area is huge, modern and very well equipped and the view of the bay from the floor to ceiling windows surrounding the long dining table is so amazing that we spent most of our 4 day break there when we were not out and hardly used the excellent living area that has SKY DVD player stereo etc. Bedrooms and bathrooms are first class like the rest of the house and everything was perfectly clean and tidy. The weather was mostly sunny but very windy but enabled us to make use of the fantastic garden overlooking the bay. Allan and Maggie were very welcoming and we were delighted to receive a welcome pack including a substantial cream tea for just a 4 day visit. Bigbury on Sea is lovely and we had two very nice meals in the Cafe at the bottom of the road. A much enjoyed short stay by a family of 8 (4 couples).

Amazing Seaview

We had an absolutely fantastic time at Seaview. It all started with a delicious Devon tea left as a welcome from the owners. The views from the gardens and house, especially the dining room are quite simply stunning. The house is extremely comfortable and well and thoughtfully equipped, a real home from home. We made good use of the coffee machine and after dinner the home cinema was a big hit with all. We were lucky with the weather and took advantage of one of the two garden BBQs and also visited local restaurants suggested by the owners, The Royal Oak in Bigsbury (Gastro style) and the Bay View Bistro at the bottom of the hill was good for simple but well cooked food.

Bigbury on Sea lives up to its beauty spot reputation, a trip on the sea tractor over to Burgh island and a walk to the top is an absolute must as is a pint of Pilchard in the Pilchard Inn. On return to the house sit with a cool drink and look out over your achievements !

In short we were a party of 6 with vast age ranges up to 84 and all would highly recommend a stay at Seaview!

----------------The Bigbury-on-Sea area

Bigbury on Sea, in the centre of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to Dartmoor, is a beautiful coastal village famous for its expanse of beautiful sandy beach with a causeway, flooded at high tide, leading to Burgh Island and its internationally famous Art Deco hotel. Bigbury / Bantham beaches are famous for surfing and every kind of watersport, with equipment available for hire on the beach. The extensive beaches are also ideal for children to play on with soft sand and three RNLI lifeguard stations. The village is situated on the South West Coast path and is an ideal base for walking in the beautiful countryside.

Kingsbridge is nearby and its fun to drive along the scenic road (flooded at high tide!) up the River Avon, well known for its birdlife and kayaking. Close by there are attractive cliff top and coastal walks, as well as other beaches and coves for fishing, with sailing and boating at nearby Salcombe and Dartmouth and golf at the beautiful 18 hole Bigbury course a five minute drive away.

The hotel, a few minutes walk from the house, was a former haunt of Edward and Mrs Simpson, Churchill and Agatha Christie and was recently voted the Most Romantic Hotel in Britain. It serves non-residents Dinner (black tie) (7 nights) and Sunday lunch making a wonderful location for that special celebration meal. The Pilchard Inn, a 700 year old smuggling inn, also on the island, serves local beers and food at lunchtime and Friday evenings.

At high tide access to the island is via a unique long legged ‘sea tractor’ running at half hourly intervals.

The village also has two beach restaurants, a General store and the excellent Discovery Surf and watersport school.

If the weather is poor, there is a pub/restaurant (seasonal) ten minutes walk away in Challaborough with pool tables, darts, Sports TV, arcade games, quizzes and more.

Our favourite way to spend an evening is to wander down to the local beach for a BBQ and some beach games with friends. There are two clever fold-up barbeques in the house which can cater for 8 to 10 easily. Take the house beach cricket set and ‘boules’ for games with the kids whilst dinner is cooking. Then watch the sun set over Burgh Island whilst enjoying a few glasses of wine and some fresh BBQ fish and seafood (if you can’t catch any off the beach there are two great local fishmongers selling day boat fish.)

As well as an outstanding beach holiday resort, Bigbury on Sea is also an ideal base for exploring Dartmoor and the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which extends from Dartmouth through Salcombe across the Avon, Erme and Yealm estuaries.

-------Salcombe Boating and Beach picnic

Salcombe, playground of the rich and famous, is only half an hours drive away. Pick up a gastronomic picnic from one of the delis there and either hire a motorboat or take one of the many ferries from town to South Sands or East Portlemouth beaches and spend the day sunbathing, swimming in the crystal clear water or just watching the activity on the water (very busy in Regatta week). Alternatively you could wander round the interesting shops and enjoy a traditional Devon cream tea by the waterside.

----------Morwellham Quay - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Ten miles north of Plymouth is Morwellham Quay, the largest Copper mine in Victoria’s Empire. It’s a terrific day out, the absolute highlight being the train trip down into the mine itself, a heart-stopping insight into the life of a miner working by candllelight underground, 150 years ago, in tunnels prone to flooding. You can also try on Victorian costumes, see how the Copper Ore was shipped from the Quay downstream in sailing ships. Visit beautifully recreated shops, village, Blacksmiths, Coopers and the Farm and Musuem used in filming BBC’s Edwardian Farm.

-------Dartmouth History, River Cruises and Steam train

Spend a day in Dartmouth (40 minutes drive away) soaking up the atmosphere in one of the most beautiful and historic harbours in Europe. Dartmouth was the sailing point for the Crusades of 1147 and 1190,

was home of the Royal Navy from the reign of Edward III, was twice attacked during the Hundred Years' War, after which the mouth of the estuary was closed every night with a great chain. The narrow mouth of the Dart is still protected by two fortified castles, Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle. During medieval times it became a major base for privateering (licensed piracy).

The pilgrim fathers rested a while in Dartmouth before setting off on their journey in the Mayflower and the Speedwell on 20 August 1620. After 300 miles they realised that the Speedwell was unseaworthy and returned to Plymouth before Mayflower then set off alone. The town has also played a part in defeating both the Spanish Armada and (rather later) Germany in WWII when it was the key launching point for the D-Day landings on Utah Beach.

The town itself has beautiful Medieval and Elizabethan architecture and is also the base for many fascinating river cruises and a steam train which runs up the coast. There are many events and festivals through the year including the Regatta, Dartmouth Music Festival, Food Festival, Open Air Shakespeare at Dartmouth Castle and much more.

-------South West Coast Path

Why not enjoy the stunning scenery and explore the famous South West Coast Path which passes through the village and runs East, crossing the River Avon on the small ferry and continuing towards Hope Cove, Bolt Tail and Salcombe and to the West across the Rivers Erme and Yealm towards Plymouth. Our favourite is to walk along the coast to the secluded and beautiful Ayrmer Cove and then inland on the old Smugglers path to the thirteenth Century Journeys End pub / restaurant at Ringmore for a great lunch or dinner cooked by the former chef at the Burgh Island Hotel.

-------South Devon Steam Railway, Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary

The historic town of Totnes is forty minutes drive from the house and from there one can take the scenic steam train along the Dart valley to Buckfastleigh, where, next to the station, you can see new Butterflies emerging in tropical surroundings and watch Otters rescued from Dartmoor and enjoy their antics at feeding time.

Its also worth visiting by car, You can board their luxury dining train, the Devonshire Pullman, for a wonderful and nostalgic experience in first class, as you enjoy a delicious meal, freshly prepared by their own chef who sources local Devon produce wherever possible. Its a 2 ½ hour trip to Totnes and back along the beautiful Dart Valley. Buckfast Abbey is nearby and worth a visit, a Benedictine Monastery founded in 1018 under the rule of King Canute.

Short break prices per night relate to; weekends 3 nights (Fri night to Sun night) or mid week 4 nights (Mon to Thurs night).We provide a 10% discount for parties of less then 6. No pets are allowed and no smoking. Party groups of four or more composed entirely of one sex or who are all under 25 cannot normally be accepted.
A deposit of 25% is required on booking and the balance due 60 days before holiday start. The security deposit of £300 is paid with the balance. Payment can be made by cheque, credit card or debit card on PayPal and by bank transfer. You may cancel up to 60 days before holiday start with no loss of deposit apart from an admin fee of £100.

Notes:
The dining table seats 8 comfortably however there is room for a further three at the adjacent breakfast bar. The lounge area seats 8 comfortably however there is room for a further three seats which can be easily moved from the dining table as the whole area is open plan. Please note: Use of all BBQ /Beach equipment is entirely at Visitors risk. Young children need to be supervised in the garden as there are two unfenced terraces in the garden with a one metre drop down and several open steps down to the garden from the house. The elderly and infirm are likely to find the open steps and sloping terrain difficult. This is a non smoking property and pets are not allowed. We also cannot accept groups of four or more which are composed entirely of one sex or who are all under 25. There are two large portable air conditioning units which can be moved to wherever required. Please note: Wooden Cots, Travel cots, High Chairs, Stair Gates etc. can all be hired for you visit.
