Salavas is a bustling village with plenty of character. Established walking and cycling trails enter the medieval heart of the village from all directions, providing easy, quiet access to the river, forests and the old citadel above the village.
In the village is a shop (with a fantastic local fruit and veg selection), bakery, newsagent and tobacconist as well as several bars and restaurants. Campsites on the river and the village community provide regular entertainments and when its time to relax, the beaches on the Ardeche River or the peace of La Roche Bleue are never far away.
Just over the bridge from Salavas is the pretty town of Vallon Pont d’Arc. Vallon is the hub of adventure activities here in the Ardeche including the highly popular canoe descent of the Ardeche Gorge. There are regular markets and festivals in Vallon as well as a busy tourist centre, shops, banks, the tourist office and supermarkets. A wander into the back streets is well worth the time – a maze of cobbled alleyways take you to viewpoints and hidden passages through the old town and into the vineyards that surround it.
Two well established rock climbing sites ‘Fontgarnide’ (from which one of our gites takes its name) and ‘Jeau’ provide the opportunity for débutantes and experienced climbers alike to test their skills on the limestone of the Ardeche.
