QUAINT CHARACTER COTTAGE IN TRADITIONAL GREEK VILLAGE

Magnisia/Pilion Cottage Rental Photos and Description

For walkers, country-lovers and those wanting to discover the real Greece.

Tucked away amongst the olive trees, this characterful cottage is probably the most romantic place you will ever stay. The bedroom, high in the eaves looking out though the fluttering green foliage feels like you're sleeping in a tree house. Wake up to bird song and views across a sparking sea.

On the ground floor there is a bathroom, kitchenette with 2 ring hob, sink and fridge, and dining area.

The cottage is cut into the hillside, so both floors are in fact at ground level, giving onto an upper and lower patio.

Ano Gatzea is a traditional Greek village. Here life has changed little over the centuries, and half of our neighbours still rely on mules as their main form of transport. Cobbled paths ('mule motorways') link the mountain villages and you can walk all day (or as long as your knees can stand it) without encountering a car. Mountain streams rush down the valleys to the sea and the dense forests are home to tortoises, wild boar and martens.

A short walk through the olive groves takes you to the still waters of the Pagasitic Gulf. Almost entirely enclosed by land, it makes for warm calm seas full of fish in winter, spring and autumn, although in high summer the waters get a bit warm for them and they head somewhere a bit cooler.

Lovely views and property, but ...

There are some things in the listing that can use some clarification. First, while there is access to WiFi, it is not inside of the cottage. If you stand in just the right spot with just the right device you get WiFi connectivity. There is certainly no wired Internet access available. Checking email is a chore. Uploading photos to FB is not really doable. For good internet service, you might try the nearby village of Kala Nera as the village seems to offer reliable and free WiFi to the beach area.

The other thing is that the cottage is in quite close quarters with a second rental unit (5 metres) that you can note in the photos. If you are looking for private outdoor space, this cottage is not for you as there is no place outside of the cottage to hold a private conversation, except at a whisper's volume.

Be prepared to go up and down some steep hills--regardless of whether you are driving or walking. While there is a cafe right next door, it has limited hours and a limited menu. Other restaurants, the grocery store and an amazing bakery are 1.5-2 km away: down hill. When walking, the return trip is a challenging option.

The cottage is quite well done. It is clean and well-maintained. The wooden beams and ceilings are quite beautiful. It does lack storage space for luggage. There are lots of walking opportunities for which the owner has prepared detailed descriptions and maps. The owners were great hosts, quite easy going and ready with all sorts of information and help. We enjoyed our stay and found the setting quite gorgeous.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We’re sorry that you had problems with the internet during your stay. The network has since been upgraded so the fluctuating signal should now be a thing of the past. That said, nowhere in the Greek countryside are you going to find superfast broadband. If you need to get serious work done while you are on holiday you should consider basing yourself in Athens.
The cottage is in the centre of a village, and so there are lots of other houses around. You should not expect solitude but you have a lot more privacy than you would have, say, in a hotel. Just to clarify about the café, which you say is “right next door” – it’s 50 metres away, so you aren’t disturbed by it (It doesn’t play music anyway).
Eating out – Georgos and Maria’s café caters for the locals and opens every evening at 8 o’clock and stays open until late. There is no menu as such - Georgos serves simple home-cooked food much of it grown on his father’s farm. The café also opens for refreshments when the tourist train comes through the village (morning and afternoon). If you tell him the night before, Georgos will also do you breakfast. For a more upmarket experience, before going further afield, you could have tried Angeliko’s (200m) which has a full à la carte menu or Doris’s, a short walk on the flat along the heritage railway line. Angeliko’s is open every evening in the summer and at weekends out of season. Doris’s is open all day every day.
Luggage storage space – I’m afraid you must be confusing us with somewhere else you stayed during your holiday in Europe. The Lemon House has a huge under-stairs cupboard (2 cubic metres) which can take any number of large suitcases.

Ruhe und Natur pur

  • 4 of 5

Character cottage in picturesque traditional Greek village at the foot of Mount Pelion with spectacular sea views. Twenty minutes walk through the olive groves to the beach. The area offers superb walking on cobbled paths through historic villages or wilderness walks high on the mountain through seemingly endless forests. A short distance from the cottage is the quaint station on Ano Gatzea, the only stop on the Pelion heritage mountain railway.
