CHARMING VILLA WITH FRUIT TREES IN TERCEIRA ISLAND

Terceira Island Villa Rental Photos and Description

This is an enchanting villa with beautiful ocean and mountain views.

The house was completely refurbished keeping most of the original centenary structures, like the kitchen designed into the old wood oven division.

Like in the past, to share the warm from the wood oven, the main division is an open space shared by kitchen, dining room and living room. Now, a wood stove (“fisherman’s TV”) in the living room keeps the house warm in the cold winter nights.

In the back of the ground floor two bedrooms and a bathroom complete the floor.

The first floor is a mezzanine composed by a suite with WC and a balcony with open ocean and mountain views. The balcony is perfect for an outside breakfast or for an end-of-day cold tea in the summer.

To complete the house interior a striking traditional wood ceiling made of Cryptomeria japonica (Japanese Cedar) a tree brought from Japan by the sailors at the time Terceira was a replenishment point for the sailing cargo ships returning from the India and Asia route to Portugal.

In the front of the house a balcony overlooking the rural part of S. Mateus and giving access to the garden.

The garden follows the natural island profile using platforms. Thanks to the mild temperate climate throughout the year and benefit from the Gulf Stream, the garden includes a large variety of flowers and fruit trees.

Topping the garden a site seeing tower “torreão”, used in the old times to look for pirates, gives a unique open view into the far horizon.

Nearby, in the village, you can find two of the best fish restaurants in the island: “Beira Mar” and “Adega de São Mateus”, and the beach of Negrito. Negrito is one of the top places to experiment the warm Gulf Stream water. Originally it was a fortification than a whaling port and now a trendy rock beach due to its shallow warm water.

5 Km east is the Island main city, Angra do Heroísmo. Angra do Heroísmo is the historical capital of the Azores; it is also the archipelago's oldest city, dating back to 1450, classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1983. Besides the rich historical content at the turn of every corner it is also good place to shop and to eat.

At 15 km are the Algar do Carvão a unique visitable volcano interior, Gruta do Natal, a visitable lava river and Furnas do Enxofre. Furnas do Enxofre is a fumarole field, it features several exit points of volcanic gases that reach temperatures the gases have made the surrounding rocks look yellow, red and whitish. This three must see attractions that tell the islands volcanic history.

In early 1449, this island was the third of the archipelago to be known by the Portuguese Navigators, and it was first named The Island of Jesus Christ. The settlement set off faster than that in the Eastern Group of islands. Initially, the economy was dominated by the production of cereals and the export of dyeing plants.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, the island became more important as an inter-continental stop over for the carrack ships sailing between Europe and the distant America and India. The harbors of Terceira were filled with precious metals and exotic spices that made the island a privileged and continuous target for the English, French and Flemish privateers.

During World War II, the British set up a military base near Praia da Vitória, which had an important role in securing the north Atlantic. Proud of its historic past filled with great deeds, the island of Terceira is still a dynamic island within the context of the Archipelago.

From the time of the trade route you will discover a gastronomy filled with exotic spices and the occasional use of Rum in some deserts (Papos de Anjo).
