Built into the mountain side, on three levels. the chalet provides four bedrooms, two toilets, two showers and a large open plan living, dining and kitchen area, ideal for two families or up to eight adults.
The main living space is open plan, with a wood fired stove, comfortable seating and a well equipped kitchen/dining area, giving a great ambiance for sociable dining and relaxing.
Our chalet is available for self catering rental all year round. Converted from a 150 year old cow shed and hay loft, it is an ideal base for climbing, walking or skiing holidays. A car is essential for most save the fittest walkers. Skiing is available in a choice of resorts from Les Arcs, 15 minutes by car, St Foye or La Rosiere 30 mins or Val d'Isere 40 mins.
Savoie is one of the most beautiful regions of France, with spectacular mountain scenery and lakes. Chalet Ecosse is ideally situated in a small rural village which can provide a base base for a wide range of holiday activities, including:
Flora and fauna.
The region is also famous for its wonderful food. Mountain specialties of local cheese and cured meats are blended with fresh produce from the fertile lower valley to create a hearty rustic cuisine.
Chalet Ecosse is so named as the owners are a Scottish family who have been using it as a holiday base for twenty years now. The chalet is a large, traditional stone built barn converted into comfortable accommodation for families or groups looking for a mountain base full of character and charm. The village of Les Echines Dessous is quiet and peaceful and still supports small farmers living a traditional way of life.
Plenty of beautiful walks start at the front door, from gentle strolls around the village, to longer treks through alpine meadows leading to the historic Fort de La Platte and onwards to view Mont Blanc or further afield into the Vanoise National Park.
If you are looking for something different to the typical ski resort box this ticks all the boxes. Easy drive to all the ski areas plus space and character in abundance.
Very relaxing and far from the madding crowd. Eventually enjoyed the no wifi environment. Gorgeous views. Washing machine would be beneficial
If you are looking for a real taste of rural Alp living with everything you need for a relaxing break then Chalet Ecosse Is perfect. Set in a village above Bourg St Maurice with stunning views of the surrounding valley and mountains it is perfectly positioned for anyone wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main town and ski resorts but still be 20 minutes from Les Arc and 40 minutes from several other smaller less busy resorts, our favourite being Sainte Foy, no queues and plenty snow for both skiers and boarders.
Bourg St Maurice has plenty of restaurants and bars for a bit of Après Ski or if you want to buy the local produce and cook back in the chalet, there's a few good supermarkets and specialised shops.
We spent most evenings cooking local produce in the chalet, drinking great wine and relaxing with a book in front of the log burning stove.
The bedrooms were well equipped with comfortable beds and heaters to keep us snug and because the village was so quite we slept in every morning.
My family spent an enjoyable 10 day skiing holiday based at Chalet Ecosse. The spacious chalet had all the rustic charm depicted in the photos and was clean and comfortable. Our evenings were spent cosely around the open fire after preparing meals in the well equipped kitchen. Access to local ski areas was good with our rented 4X4 but chains may be required to and from the village in some conditions if using a conventional vehicle. Communication with the owners via email was efficient and friendly. We would recommend this property to others and intend returning ourselves.
We have been going here for a complete change Spring/autumn for a number of years. The village is in a great position, with views both up and down the Isere valley as well as over to the slopes of Les Arcs. For walkers, there are unlimited possibilities depending on your fitness, and you don't need to get in a car. An hour's easy walk will take you up to Alpine meadows, often covered with Spring or Autumn crocus, and the other wild flowers are just amazing; gentians, rock roses, asters, scabious etc. as well as rarities like grass of parnassus and purple saxifrage. The beautiful Beaufort cows just look at you, and you can watch the buzzards circle overhead. There are rushing rivers, rocky screes, mixed and coniferous woods, ancient forts, and roads up the mountain which have been improved substantially, allowing access by car to higher starting points.
The chalet itself is comfortable and the use of traditional effects and artefacts make it interesting and different.
Shopping in Bourg St. Maurice is fun, with supermarkets and traditional French shops, all with plenty of choice. The weekly Saturday market is a must! It's difficult not to enjoy the wonderful bread, cheese and other delicacies, and there is plenty choice in the wine department. Lunch " sur la terrace" ...memorable. It's never too hot up at the village, even when it's well into the 30s in Bourg. The villagers are friendly and if you speak some French, even better.
We're looking forward to this year's trip. Bon appetit!
A comfortable rustic property in quiet Alpine village, the views out over the valley are stunning. We enjoyed staying here so much we have been several times and have had memorable family holidays.
The kitchen is well equipped, the beds are comfortable, there is a good supply of hot water and its great to be able to relax in front of the wood burner after a days skiing.
We found the house ideally placed in the Isere Valley to allow easy driving to most of the well known ski areas, so you can pick and choose where you go depending on the weather and snow conditions. Ste Foy on a powder day or Peisey for trees when its misty or the miles of high level pistes in Val d' Isere/Tignes if the snow is scarce. A bonus is that when it is snowing the road up to the house from Bourg is ploughed twice a day.
The chalet is located at the edge of the small, peaceful village of Les Echines Dessous, high above the bustling town of Bourg St. Maurice, in the Savoie region of the French Alps. At 1230 meters, this rustic chalet enjoys a beautiful climate, never too hot in summer and plenty of snow in winter.
The chalet overlooks Les Arcs Paradiski ski resort and is also near Val d'Isere, La Rosiere and Sainte Foy. Mont Blanc is within a day's walk or a short drive and in summer, Courmayeur and the Aosta valley in Italy are within easy driving distance.
Skiing, climbing and walking opportunities are too many to list as well as many other sports such as mountain biking, swimming in lakes or outdoor pools, white water rafting and par ascending.
The Vanoise National park is only a few minutes from the house.
A great choice of bars restaurants cafes and shops is available in nearby Bourg St Maurice.
Cheap flights are available to Geneva, Lyon, Grenoble and Chambery airports from various UK airports. All are within 2 hours drive from the chalet. From the channel ports the chalet is about an 8 hour drive. Trains serve Bourg St Maurice which is 15 minutes by car or taxi from the chalet.
